Best Friend

“Hey, Racum,” said Sly Fox, walking up through the meadow. “Wait up!”

Racum stopped walking along the pathway and waited for Sly to catch up to him.

“Where have you been lately?” asked Sly. “I haven’t seen you around.”

“I’ve been busy,” said Racum.

“Well, I know you’ve been busy hanging around with Mad Dog,” said Sly.

Racum detected a hint of jealousy in Sly’s voice.

“Sly, your not jealous of Mad Dog, are you?” asked Racum.

“Who me!” exclaimed Sly, angrily. “Why would I be jealous of Mad Dog!”

“Sly,” said Racum. “I know you are jealous and there is no use in you denying it.”

“Alright Racum,” said Sly. “Maybe I am just a little bit jealous.”

“Why?” asked Racum.

“l thought you were my best friend,” said Sly.

“I am,” said Racum. “But, what does that have to do with Mad Dog?”

“Well you’ve been spending all your time with him lately,” said Sly.

“Mad Dog needed me,” said Racum. “Just because we are best friends doesn’t mean that we can’t have other friends.”

“I know that,” said Sly. “I just miss you.”

“I’ve missed you too,” said Racum. “Look, Sly. Why don’t we do something right now?”

“Sure,” said Sly.

Racum and Sly spent the rest of that afternoon together, playing ball. They had a lot of fun together, but most importantly, they were able to catch up on what’s been going on and just enjoy each other’s company.

“That was fun,” said Sly afterwards.

“Yes it was,” said Racum. “I guess that best friends need to spend some quality time together every once in awhile.”
