Fawn and Spot were taking a walk in the field one day at their ranch in British Columbia, Canada. They were enjoying the warm fall weather when they spotted an animal dart through the long tall grass.
“What are you doing?” asked Fawn.
“Who me?” asked the animal.
“Yes,” said Fawn. “Why are you walking around in this field? I’ve never seen you before.”
“We are Fawn and Spot,” said Spot to the animal.
“Well hello Fawn and Spot,” said the animal, moving closer and closer to them.
“What kind of animal are you?” asked Fawn, when the animal got close enough that Fawn could get a really good look at him.
“I’m a coyote,” said the animal. “My name is Carl Coyote.”
“Well it is nice to meet you,” said Spot.
“You too,” said Carl.
“Hey,” said Fawn. “Aren’t you like that cartoon animal that chases after that bird on the television?”
“No,” said Carl. “That is a different coyote. Sorry, but I’m not as famous as that coyote.”
“You kind of remind me of a fox and a wolf,” said Fawn.
“Fawn,” scolded Spot. “Be careful that you don’t hurt Carl’s feelings.”
“It is okay Spot,” said Carl. “Your friend isn’t hurting my feelings. He is right, though, I do kind of look like a fox and I do kind of look like a wolf. However, I’m neither. I’m a coyote.”
“You are kind of a neat animal,” said Fawn. “You have a long bushy tail and a long short snout.”
“Yes,” said Spot. “Your tail is like a fox’s tail and your snout is like a wolf’s tail.”
“Hey,” said Fawn. “Do you howl like a wolf or do you yip like a fox?”
“I actually do both,” said Carl.
“Wow,” said Fawn. “You are cool.”
“Gee thanks,” said Carl. “Nobody’s ever told me that before.”
“You aren’t mean like a wolf though, are you?” asked Fawn.
“Well,” said Carl. “What do you think?”
“I don’t think you are mean at all,” said Fawn.
“You guessed it,” said Carl. “Anyway, I gotta go. I busy today catching mice in the field.”
“Oh then you must be just like a cat too,” said Fawn, laughing.
“No,” said Carl, smiling. “I’m definitely not a cat.”
Carl became best friends with Fawn and Spot and each day that they were outside in the field they would stop to talk to each other. The more Fawn and Spot got to know Carl, the more intrigued by him they were.
