Mrs. Robin and the Porcupine

It was a rainy spring day. Mrs. Robin had just finished feeding her three babies when she heard something rustling in the dried up leaves that covered the ground. She looked over the edge of the nest and was frightened when she saw a porcupine.

“That porcupine could be a danger to me and my babies,” said Mrs. Robin. “I must do everything I can to keep my babies safe.”

Mrs. Robin knew that the porcupine could climb trees. However, she had built her nest very high up so she was pretty sure that her babies were safe.

The porcupine walked along the ground. Mrs. Robin peered over the side of the nest, watching every move the porcupine made. The porcupine didn’t even look up at all. He appeared to pose no threat to Mrs. Robin. She didn’t care though. She was not going to take her eyes off the porcupine until she knew it was well away from the nest. One thing Mrs. Robin would never do was put her babies in any danger whatsoever. She would do whatever it took to protect them.

The babies started to move around in the nest. Mrs. Robin opened up her wings and motioned for the babies to curl up with her.

The babies did as they were told. They had no reason not to. They knew their mother had their best interests at heart. When mother told them to do something, they did it, no questions asked.

While the babies were curled up under her wings, Mrs. Robin never took her eyes off the porcupine. Luckily, the porcupine left the area. Mrs. Robin quickly flew down onto the ground when she felt the porcupine was a safe enough distance away. She gathered enough worms to keep her babies fed for a few hours.

Back up in the nest, Mrs. Robin kept an eye out just in case the porcupine decided to return. It was a few hours before Mrs. Robin was absolutely safe and felt that the porcupine was not going to return.
