Character Notes
Rat Boy was born out of the author’s long-standing loathing of rats, which were always seen as dirty, disease-ridden creatures that made the author cringe and look away whenever they appeared on screen. That discomfort became deeply ingrained during the Toronto garbage strike of 2002, when the author sat parked outside a Chinese food restaurant early one morning before work and watched several beady-eyed rats scrounging through towering piles of garbage bags.
To help settle that unsettling memory, Rat Boy was created on July 3, 2016. Giving him life allowed the author to view rats with tolerance, showing that genuine good can come from something once seen with dread. Over time, Rat Boy grew into a loving and dedicated son and brother. His household in Brandon, Manitoba is centered on mutual care and resilience: he adores and constantly looks after his sister Cecilia; he deeply respects his hardworking mother; and he embraces his father, who after being absent for several years has returned to become an integral, indispensable part of the family.
