Poor Mountain Mother’s Special Valentine’s Day

The Poor Mountain Family were sitting around their kitchen table just after finishing dinner.

“Valentine’s Day is only a few days away,” said Poor Mountain Sister.

“We should do something special for Poor Mountain Mother,” said Poor Mountain Brother, as Poor Mountain Mother left the table to answer the phone.

“We really should,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “However, we don’t have any money? What could we do?”

Poor Mountain Father stood up and reached into his pocket and pulled out a crisp $50 bill. The two Poor Mountain children couldn’t believe their eyes. They haven’t seen a $50 bill in so long.

“Where did you get that?” asked Poor Mountain Brother.

“I got a bonus from the mill today,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I can’t think of a better way to spend it either.”

The Poor Mountain children and Poor Mountain Father made plans for a very special Valentine’s Day celebration. Poor Mountain Father thought he would cook Poor Mountain Mother’s favourite meal, roast chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. The two Poor Mountain children thought they would clean the house and setup the decorations.

“On Valentine’s Day morning,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “We need to get Poor Mountain Mother out of the house for a few hours.”

“Already taken care of,” said Poor Mountain Father.

Valentine’s Day morning came along and Poor Mountain Father was up bright and early. He made a wonderful breakfast for Poor Mountain Mother and he took it into her.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” he said, setting the tray down and giving her a kiss.

On the tray was a single red rose, homemade pancakes and freshly squeezed orange juice.

“I’m surprised,” cried Poor Mountain Mother.

Poor Mountain Mother ate her breakfast and then got up out of bed. The two Poor Mountain children were eating their breakfast when she came into the kitchen.

“Oh my!” she exclaimed. “You’ve got the Poor Mountain children fed already, too! I’m impressed.”

The Poor Mountain children had a couple of gifts to give to Poor Mountain Mother and then Poor Mountain Father handed her an envelope.

“A day at the spa!” exclaimed Poor Mountain Mother. “This is really nice but how can we afford it.”

“Don’t worry,” said Poor Mountain Father.

“Poor Mountain Father got a bonus,” said Poor Mountain Brother.

“Oh I see,” said Poor Mountain Mother.

Once Poor Mountain Mother left for the spa everyone cleaned the house from top to bottom and then the Poor Mountain children started decorating and Poor Mountain Father started cooking dinner.

Poor Mountain Mother cried when she saw what her family had done for her.

“Why are you crying?” asked Poor Mountain Brother.

“These are tears of happiness,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I feel like a queen today.”

“So then we must be rich,” said Poor Mountain Sister.

“In more ways than one,” said Poor Mountain Mother.
