Pea Pods Autumn

“The leaves are starting to turn colours,” said Mommy Pea Pod. “I am scared. Autumn is here. I don’t want to be on someone’s dinner plate.”

“I am scared too,” said Daddy Pea Pod. “Everyone will be craving us soon. They will want fresh peas smothered in butter.”

“There aren’t too many of us this year,” said Mommy Pea Pod. “A lot of ranches couldn’t get their peas to grow this year because of all the rain Calgary had.”

“That is what worries me so much,” said Daddy Pea Pod. “There is a shortage of peas this year.”

Farmer Ted and his wife, Sue, came into the house. They are the owners of the ranch where the Pea Pod family lives. There were both finished with their chores for the evening.

“What is for dinner?” asked Farmer Ted. “I am starving.”

“Roast beef and mashed potatoes,” said Sue.

“That sounds good,” said Farmer Ted.

There was a knock at the door. It was their neighbour, Farmer Stan. Farmer Stan wanted to borrow Farmer Ted’s tractor for an hour or so.

“Just a minute,” said Farmer Ted, letting Farmer Stan into the hallway. “I have to get the key for the tractor.”

“Take your time,” said Farmer Stan. “I’m in no rush.”

“Would you like to stay for dinner?” asked Farmer Ted. “We are having roast beef and mashed potatoes.”

“Sure,” said Farmer Stan.

The phone rang and Farmer Ted went to answer it. Meanwhile, Farmer Stan saw the Pea Pod family. They were in the study.

“Are you real live peas?” asked Farmer Stan, licking his lips and thinking about how good the Pea Pod family were going to taste with the roast beef and mashed potatoes.

Luckily Sue had just walked by the study. She saw Farmer Stan licking his lips.

“They are real,” said Sue. “They are also part of our family. We don’t eat peas in this house.”

“I am deeply sorry,” said Farmer Stan. “I didn’t know.”

“It is okay,” said Sue. “You had no way of knowing.”

“There is a high demand for peas right now,” said Farmer Stan. “I would be hiding these little guys until the pea shortage is over.”

“Good idea,” said Sue, gathering up the Pea Pod family.

Sue took the Pea Pods and hid them upstairs in the attic. She wasn’t going to take a chance of something happening to them.

Moral of this Story:

  • Example: There was a high demand for peas but Sue didn’t care. She hid the Pea Pod family out of sight.
