Second Chance
“Tyler!” exclaimed Tiffany. “Please wait up.”
Tyler stopped walking and waited for Tiffany to catch up to him.
“What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?” asked Tiffany, all out of breath.
“Nothing much,” said Tyler.
“Do you want to go to the Valentine’s Day dance with me?” asked Tiffany.
“I’ll have to let you know,” said Tyler. “I’m not sure if I can go. I would need to buy a new suit because my old one doesn’t fit me anymore.”
“Yes,” said Tiffany, trying to think of something to say to Tyler about her dad because she did not want Tyler to know that her dad was just an automotive mechanic. “Of course, I’ll be getting a new dress for the dance, seeing as my dad is a banker and all.”
“Oh yeah,” said Tyler. “My uncle is a banker too. What is your last name? I bet my uncle knows your dad.”
“Kendall,” said Tiffany. “My last name is Kendall.”
“Okay,” said Tyler. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow about the dance.”
“Good,” said Tiffany. “Talk to you then.”
Tyler went home that evening and asked his uncle if he knew Mr. Kendall that worked at the bank.
“No,” said Uncle Joe. “I’ve never heard that name before.”
“That is strange,” said Tyler. “Tiffany said her dad works at the bank.”
“Nope,” said Uncle Joe. “There’s only one bank in town and I know there is no Mr. Kendall working there.”
“Kendall,” said Tyler’s father, who was reading the newspaper. “Where have I heard that name before? Oh wait, I know. He’s the mechanic that worked on my car last week.”
“Yes,” said Uncle Joe. “That is the only Kendall that I know too.”
“Why would Tiffany lie to me?” asked Tyler.
“Some girls feel that they have to lie to make themselves look better so that people will like them more,” said Tyler’s father.
“Well,” said Tyler. “That is just stupid. Now, I don’t know if I want to go to the dance with her after her lying to me like that.”
“Now now,” said Uncle Joe. “Why don’t you give the poor girl a second chance?”
“And let her get away with lying to me,” said Tyler. “That doesn’t seem right.”
“Oh no,” said Tyler’s father. “You must confront her about the lying but Uncle Joe is right, you should give her a second chance.”
“So does that mean you will buy me a new suit then?” asked Tyler.
“I will,” said Uncle Joe.
“Thanks,” said Tyler, giving his uncle a big warm hug.
“Tiffany,” said Tyler the next day at school. “Look, I want to tell you that I know your dad isn’t a banker, he’s a mechanic. Why did you lie to me?”
“Well,” said Tiffany, close to tears that Tyler had caught her in a lie. “I’m sorry Tyler. It is just that I didn’t think you’d want to go out with me if you thought my dad was just a mechanic.”
“Why would you think that?” asked Tyler. “My dad is just an insurance salesman.”
“He is?” asked Tiffany.
“Yes,” said Tyler. “Now Tiffany. I will go to the dance with you on Valentine’s Day but I don’t want anymore lies.”
“Okay,” said Tiffany. “Tyler, I’m really sorry and I promise I won’t lie ever again.”
Tiffany felt so bad about the lie that she told to Tyler that she made sure that she was honest with Tyler. She made sure that she didn’t lie to anyone anymore.
“You look beautiful,” said Tyler, when he picked Tiffany up for the dance.
“You look very dashing,” said Tiffany to Tyler, while Tyler pinned a corsage on Tiffany’s dress.
Tyler almost poked Tiffany with the pin because he was very nervous. Tyler and Tiffany had a wonderful time at the dance. They danced quite a few songs and they also got a chance to talk and get to know each other better.
“Thank you,” said Tyler, at Tiffany’s doorstep. “I’m really glad I gave you a second chance.”
“Me too,” said Tiffany. “Me too!”
