Christopher Corn
“A beautiful summer day,” sang Christopher Corn. “It is time to play. Let’s dance and sing and, a fun time we will bring.”
“Oh Christopher,” said Mrs. Tomato, who was walking around the garden. “You have such a beautiful voice.”
“Why thank you,” said Christopher, bashfully. “I like your voice as well. Why don’t you sing with me?”
“I would love to,” said Mrs. Tomato.
“Hey, hey little children,” sang Christopher. “Your veggies are a must. I am Christopher Corn. I’m the one you can trust.”
“Veggies, veggies, veggies,” sang Mrs. Tomato. “Corn, carrots, onions and cauliflower. Veggies, veggies, veggies. They will give you power.”
“Ha! ha!” laughed Christopher. “I love it!”
“You know,” said Mrs. Tomato. “If I weren’t already married, we would make a really good pair.”
“Right,” laughed Christopher.
“You know,” said Mrs. Tomato, raising her voice. “I had a talk with Calvin Carrot and he asked me if my so-called marriage is real. I was so angry with him.”
“People are going to wonder about a marriage that you claim is from a past life,” said Christopher, in his most calming voice. “It is only natural for people to wonder about it.”
“I suppose that is true,” said Mrs. Tomato, feeling Christopher’s calming voice working to calm her down.
“How do you know you were married in a previous life?” asked Christopher.
“I can feel it,” said Mrs. Tomato. “Calvin gave me some advice.”
“What was his advice?” asked Christopher.
“He said he doesn’t believe in past lives,” said Mrs. Tomato. “And then he told me that while I have the right to believe in whatever I want, I should live in this present life, not the past and not the future but, the here and now. He told me not to waste my time in a past life. He said I need to find someone I can love here in the present.”
“That does sound like pretty sound advice,” said Christopher.
“I get what you and Calvin are saying,” said Mrs. Tomato. “However, I am deeply satisfied with my life the way it is. I am truly happy.”
“You know,” said Christopher. “As long as you are happy, that is the main thing.”
“What about you?” asked Mrs. Tomato. “Are you truly happy?”
“For the most part,” said Christopher. “I do have my dark days.”
“You have such a calming effect on everyone,” said Mrs. Tomato. “I can’t picture you having a dark day.”
“It happens,” said Christopher. “And, on those days I feel so alone in this big world we live in. Sometimes I feel empty and void.”
“You know,” said Mrs. Tomato. “If you ever need someone to talk to, Cameron Cauliflower is a good listener.”
“Yes,” said Christopher. “He certainly is. I have cried on his shoulder many a time.”
“It does help to have someone to talk to,” said Mrs. Tomato.
“I know,” said Christopher. “I find my music helps.”
“Yes,” said Mrs. Tomato. “Music helps me as well.”
Christopher picked up his guitar and he started singing again.
“I could listen to you sing for hours,” said Mrs. Tomato.
“Thank you,” said Christopher. “I think I am going to start a band. I have been thinking about that a lot lately. I even have the name picked out, ‘Loud Garden’.”
“Oh!” exclaimed Mrs. Tomato. “I love it. Can I be in your band? I, not only can sing, I also play the harp and the tambourine.”
“I would be honoured to have you in my band,” said Christopher. “I like to experiment with different instruments. I play drums, keyboard and guitar. The guitar is my favourite though.”
“I am very excited about ‘Loud Garden’,” said Mrs. Tomato, smiling.
“I am too,” said Christopher, also smiling. “I feel good about this.”
“As do I,” said Mrs. Tomato.
