Hot and Sticky

“It is hot again today,” said Fawn, coming into the barn.

”Not again,” complained Spot. ”This is the fifth day in a row! When is it going to get a little cooler?”

”I don’t know,” said Fawn with sweat dripping off him. ”The weather is so strange anymore. It seems we don’t have a proper spring anymore. The weather seems to jump from the coldest winter right to the hottest summer with nothing in between.”

”It seems that way,” said Spot. ”You watch, tomorrow will probably be freezing cold!”

”That wouldn’t surprise me,” said Fawn. ”That doesn’t solve a thing about today, though. We’ve got to do something about this heat! I can’t stand it!”

“What do you want to do?” asked Spot.

”I don’t know,” said Fawn. “I do wish that we were at the North Pole right now!”

”Yeah!” said Spot. ”Right on the very tip of an iceberg.”

”Yes,” said Fawn. ”That would be great, wouldn’t it! I think I could make friends with a polar bear pretty quickly.”

”We’d have to be friends with a polar bear,” laughed Spot. ”We certainly wouldn’t want to be their enemies!”

”That’s true,” said Fawn.

“Hi Fawn, hi Spot,” said Jenny Hansen, coming into the barn. ”How are you?”

“We are hot!” exclaimed Spot.

”And sticky!” added Fawn.

”Well you won’t be for long,” said Jenny. ”We have a surprise for you!”

”What is it?” asked Fawn, excitedly.

Fawn loved surprises and he could hardly wait until Jenny could tell him what it was.

”You’ll see,” said Jenny. ”Now come on and follow me.”

Fawn and Spot followed Jenny. She was walking in the direction of the pond.

”How come we’re going to the pond?” asked Fawn. ”I thought we weren’t allowed down here.”

”We weren’t,” said Jenny. ”But, today Daddy said that we could.”

Fawn stopped dead in his tracks.

”Fawn, what’s wrong?” asked Jenny, when she noticed that Fawn wasn’t following her any more.

“Mr. Hansen always told me to stay away from the pond,” said Fawn.

”Oh come on, Fawn,” said Spot.

”Is that so?” asked Mr. Hansen, coming up the walkway to find out what all the commotion was about. “And, I suppose that’s why I found this old towel down there.”

”Oh boy,” said Fawn, under his breath. ”I’m in trouble again.”
