Trouble Raking Leaves

“I have to work late tonight,” said Lil’ Rebel’s Dad. “I would love it if you could rake the leaves after school today.”

“I can do that,” said Lil’ Rebel. “Then, can we talk about getting a kitten? I really, really want one.”

“We will talk about it,” said Dad.

That day at school, Lil’ Rebel’s friend, Sally didn’t show up. Lil’ Rebel stopped by her house on the way home from school. She found out that Sally and her parents were very sick.

Lil’ Rebel noticed Sally’s front lawn was covered in leaves. She thought she would do something nice for them and rake their leaves. She figured she would have time to do theirs and then do hers after that.

Lil’ Rebel worked hard and she finished her neighbours leaves in just over two hours. Lil’ Rebel went home, grabbed a snack and sat in the living room and was going to watch television for half an hour before going outside to rake their leaves. However, her dad showed up early.

“What is going on?” asked Dad, angrily. “I asked you to do one thing for me and you can’t even do it.”

“Why are you home early?” asked Lil’ Rebel. “I thought you had to work late.”

“The meeting was cancelled,” said Dad.

“I was going to do the leaves right after this show,” said Lil’ Rebel.

“You go to your room,” said Dad “I will do the leaves myself and you will not be getting a kitten.”

Lil’ Rebel went to her room. She was upset because she didn’t have a chance to tell her dad why she didn’t have the leaves raked up.

Lil’ Rebel’s mother came home from work. She saw her husband raking the leaves.

“Why are you raking the leaves?” asked Mother. “I thought Lil’ Rebel was going to do it.”

“I came home and she was sitting on the couch watching TV,” said Dad. “I sent her to her room.”

Mother went into the house and went to Lil’ Rebel’s room to find out why she didn’t do as she was told.

“I was going to rake ours right after the show I was watching was over,” said Lil’ Rebel.

“But you were supposed to do them right after school,” said Mother.

“Sally didn’t show up at school today,” said Lil’ Rebel. “I stopped by her place to make sure she was okay. Her and her parents were sick.”

“Sorry to hear that,” said Dad, coming into the house to get a drink of water and overhearing the conversation between Lil’ Rebel and her mother. “That still doesn’t explain why our leaves weren’t raked up. You still had lots of time.”

“When I came out of Sally’s house I noticed their leaves weren’t raked up,” cried Lil’ Rebel. “So I raked theirs up. It took me about two hours. I came home and grabbed a snack and had full intentions of doing ours after my tv show was over.”

“Until I came home and didn’t even give you the chance to explain,” said Dad, feeling absolutely horrible. “I am so sorry.”

“It is okay,” said Lil’ Rebel. “You didn’t know.”

“But I should have given you the chance to tell me,” said Dad.

Lil’ Rebel’s Dad felt horrible. He was beside himself. He wanted to make it up to Lil’ Rebel because what she did was unselfish and generous. Then, he remembered that Lil” Rebel was asking for a kitten. The next day he went to the animal shelter on his way home from work.

“What is in the box?” asked Lil’ Rebel when her dad came home with a cardboard box in his arms.

“It is for you,” said Dad, handing her the box.

“A kitten!” cried Lil’ Rebel, opening the box and seeing the cutest little orange and white kitten she had ever seen. “What is her name?”

“Trouble,” laughed Dad. “Her name is Trouble.”

“Thank you, “said Lil’ Rebel, hugging her dad.

“You are welcome,” said Dad.
