Baby Face Monster

Deep in a hollow cave in the wilderness in Northern Ontario, lived a monster that only a very few people have seen. This monster was known as Baby Face. His face was the reason he is called that. His face was a baby face.

Now, Baby Face was not an ugly monster like most monsters are. In fact, some people might actually think he was handsome, in his own unique way. However, Baby Face did not like the way he looked at all. He always thought he was very ugly and that was the main reason that he lived in a cave in the middle of nowhere.

Baby Face spent most of his time fishing and gathering herbs and other plants that he could eat. He lived by himself and he enjoyed the solitude. He lived a very simple life.

One day, Baby Face was fishing down by the river and he heard some noise coming from a clearing downstream. The noise sounded like something banging metal together, almost like two metal pots.

Baby Face went to the clearing to investigate. There had not been anyone in that clearing for years. He didn’t want anyone living anywhere near his cave. That clearing was too close for comfort.

Baby Face got to the clearing and he saw what was making the noise he heard. There, in the middle of the clearing was a woman setting up camp. She was using a hammer to drive the stakes into the ground for her tent. Normally, Baby Face would be very angry and upset that someone was using the clearing. However, he saw the woman’s face and he was mesmerized by her beauty. He had never seen anyone so beautiful in his life.

“Oh hello,” said the woman when she saw Baby Face looking at her. “I hope it is okay if I camp here.”

“Yes,” said Baby Face, still staring at this woman. “That is fine. You aren’t hurting anything.”

“Oh good,” said the woman.

“Are you here by yourself?” asked Baby Face.

“Yes,” said the woman. “I am a researcher. I am researching a monster that is believed to live in a cave close to here. His name is Baby Face.”

Baby Face looked away quickly but it was too late. The woman had figured out who he was.

“Wait a minute,” said the woman, taking a good look at Baby Face’s face. “You are him, aren’t you? You are Baby Face.”

“Yes,” said Baby Face. “I am.”

“You don’t look like a monster to me,” said the woman, holding out her hand for Baby Face to shake. My name is Ellie.”

“It is nice to meet you Ellie,” said Baby Face. “Welcome to my part of the world.”

Baby Face shook Ellie’s hand and he couldn’t help but notice how soft her skin was.

“Why is such a beautiful woman like you researching a monster like me?” asked Baby Face.

“Thank you for the compliment,” said Ellie. “I come from a family of researchers. My father was out here about ten years ago researching you. He never did find you.”

“That was your Father,” said Baby Face.

“Yes,” said Ellie. “So, you saw him?”

“I remember someone setup camp in this area and it would have been about ten years ago,” said Baby Face.

“That would have been my Father,” said Ellie. “He never actually returned home after that research assignment.”

“He was here for about a month,” said Baby Face. “One day I walked by here and his tent and equipment were all gone.”

“Did you ever see him after that?” asked Ellie.

“I get the feeling you are researching your dad’s disappearance,” said Baby Face. “And not me at all.”

“I am sorry,” said Ellie. “Yes, I am researching my Father’s disappearance.”

“Why don’t you come to my cave tonight?” asked Baby Face. “I will cook you a fish dinner and we can discuss the disappearance of your Father.”

“That sounds good to me,” said Ellie.

Baby Face gave Ellie directions to his cave. She told him she would be about an hour. With sweaty palms, Baby Face went to his cave and quickly cleaned up. He then remembered a journal that he had found close to the clearing, just after Ellie’s father had been there, ten years ago.

“Did this journal belong to your Father,” asked Baby Face. “I found it near the clearing where you are camping just after your Father left.”

Ellie took a look at the handwriting and the initials written on the front of it. It was her Father’s journal.

“Thank you so much,” said Ellie, reading the last few entries. “This journal talks about the last days of his life. It states that he was very ill. The very last entry states how much he loved my mother and I and how he wasn’t sure he was going to make it out alive. He may have died out here. Can you show me exactly where you found this journal?”

“I will tomorrow,” said Baby Face. “It is getting way too dark now.”

“Of course,” said Ellie.

Ellie and Baby Face had a nice meal together and Baby Face walked her back to her clearing.

Bright and early the next morning, Baby Face showed Ellie where he found the journal. Ellie noticed a tent setup behind a big rock just feet from where the journal was found.

Before Baby Face could stop her, Ellie tore open the tent and screamed at what she saw inside. Baby Face hugged her. He knew from the sound of that scream that Ellie had found the skeletal remains of her father.

“I am so sorry,” said Baby Face.

“At least I can put him to rest now,” said Ellie. “I now know what happened to him and I know that he didn’t just abandon my mother and I.”

Ellie left that next morning. She told Baby Face that she would have someone fly in to pick up her father’s remains.

“Will I ever see you again?” asked Baby Face, sad to see Ellie leave.

“Of course,” said Ellie. “I want to finish my Father’s work.”

“I see,” said Baby Face, happily. “So this time you will be researching me, for real.”

“Yes,” said Ellie. “For real this time.”

Ellie gave Baby Face a hug and a kiss on his cheek. Baby Face was so happy and he couldn’t wait for Ellie’s return.
