Bald Eagle
I have always wanted to see a bald eagle. Bald eagles to me are the king of the animal family. They are pure power and purely majestic. Bald eagles are not something that you get to see every day of your life, but something that you might, if you are lucky, get to see once in a lifetime.
I finally got my chance to see a bald eagle this summer. The bald eagle that I saw wasn’t in a zoo and it wasn’t confined to a cage. It was a real wild bald eagle and what a sight it was.
We were camping at the Beaver Creek Campground, in Waneta, British Columbia, Canada, this past summer. Our campsite was only yards from the Columbia River.
Sitting in my camp chair at the campsite that hot July morning, I looked up into the clear blue sky and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Circling above the Columbia River was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. It was a bald eagle.
I recognized the white head and yellow beak right away! I pointed to the sky, not wanting to frighten it away, but wanting the rest of my family to have a look too. This was a once in a lifetime sighting and I didn’t want them to miss it.
We looked, with mouths open wide and eyes peeled to the sky, as the bald eagle circled above us. It was so powerful and so beautiful. We all watched, speechless and then just as quickly as he came, he was gone. I assumed that he was probably fishing in the river for his breakfast as the Columbia River was teeming with fish.
Just as we were all discussing how marvelous it was to be able to see this alluring creature, he circled above us again. We were ecstatic and couldn’t believe our luck! Two sightings in one day!
Seeing the bald eagle was a dream come true for me, even if it was only for a moment. I wish I could have gotten a picture of him but my camera was in the van. I certainly will never forget seeing him. That image is burned in my mind permanently.
