Batty is Scared
“Hey Batty,” said Fawn. “It is almost Halloween. How come your not getting ready?”
Fawn’s friend, Batty, was hanging upside down in his cave.
“I’m not celebrating Halloween this year,” said Batty.
“You’re not,” said Fawn, a little worried about his friend. “You are a bat. I thought bats loved Halloween.”
“Normally,” said Batty. “We do love Halloween. However, I’m a little scared about this Halloween.”
“Why?” asked Fawn. “What are you afraid of?”
“I don’t really want to talk about it,” said Batty.
“It might help to talk about it,” said Fawn. “Whenever I’m afraid of something I always talk to Spot about things. It helps me get over my fear.”
“Okay,” said Batty. “The reason I’m afraid of this Halloween is because my Grandfather is coming to visit me. I haven’t seen him in years.”
“Well,” said Fawn. “I can see why you’d be afraid but I think having your Grandfather come for a visit would be a good thing.”
“You don’t know my Grandfather,” said Batty. “He is so picky and if he sees one thing out of place he’ll start an argument.”
“I see,” said Fawn. “That is no reason to fear him though and you said yourself you haven’t seen him in years. Maybe he has changed.”
Batty took a moment and thought long and hard about what Fawn had just said.
“I don’t know,” said Batty. “It is just that I’ve never felt comfortable being around him.”
“I’ve got an idea,” said Fawn. “Why don’t Spot and I come over and we’ll have like a Halloween party and maybe it will help your relationship with your Grandfather.”
“Oh Fawn,” said Batty. “That is a wonderful idea.”
“Okay,” said Fawn. “I’ll go tell Spot and we’ll see you on Halloween.”
“Thanks,” said Batty.
Batty did feel much better about his Grandfather coming, since talking to Fawn. He was also able to get his mind off things because he had a Halloween party to plan for. Halloween came and Batty’s Grandfather showed up early. When he saw Batty’s cave decorated for the Halloween party, he was very pleased and excited.
“A Halloween party!” exclaimed Grandfather. “What a wonderful idea?”
Fawn and Spot showed up a few hours later and they really enjoyed spending time with Batty and his Grandfather. They all had a wonderful Halloween. Batty was able to put away any fears he had about his Grandfather and his Grandfather even promised him that he would be back again for next year’s Halloween party.
“Thank you, Fawn,” said Batty, that night as Fawn and Spot were leaving to go home. “You don’t know what your suggestion has done for my Grandfather and I.”
“As a matter of fact,” said Fawn. “I do. I can see that you and your Grandfather have a wonderful relationship and I’m so happy that I was able to help you.”
“You are something else,” said Spot. “You didn’t tell me that you helped Batty and his Grandfather.”
“Yes,” said Fawn. “I just explained to Batty about how he shouldn’t fear his Grandfather and that he should look forward to his visit instead.”
“You are wonderful,” said Spot, kissing Fawn on the cheek. “Happy Halloween!”
