Autumn in the Prairies
Hi this is Prairie Kid. I’m the Canadian Brother that lives in the prairie province of Alberta, Canada. Sorry, I don’t have much time to chat with you right now. Autumn in the prairies is a very busy time of the year. There is so much work to be done and probably not enough days to finish it before the snow starts to fly.
I get up at the crack of dawn and I work straight through the whole day, stopping only when the sun goes down and it is too dark to do any more work. At night when I come into the house my whole body is still sore from all the work and a nice hot bath is in order, even before I have my dinner.
I have a couple of hundred acres of field to cultivate and get ready for spring planting before the snow flies. Some mornings the fields are covered with a thin layer of frost. This all gets ploughed under and pretty soon there is no sign of frost at all. A few mornings there has even been a thick layer of snow on the fields.
Being a prairie rancher, I don’t get to enjoy the autumn season as much as I’d like because of all the work that has to be done. However, I do enjoy the wildlife that I see while in my tractor. Antelope dot the fields and so do the deer. On top of every fence post, a beautiful red-tailed hawk will sit, waiting for his meal to pop out of the field.
Autumn weather in the prairies is very unpredictable. It could pour rain one day and then freeze rain the next and then a few days later snow like the dickens. We never know from one day to the next what kind of weather we are going to have and we have to work like mad to get everything done before the weather stops us dead in our tracks.
