Forgetting Litter

“This was a good idea having take-out for lunch,” said Forgetful Fred.

“Yes it was,” said Forgetful Fred’s wife, Sarah. “I have to get back to work. Can you make sure to throw our litter in the trash? After all, it is Earth Day and we don’t want to leave our litter for someone else to pick up.”

“Yes,” said Forgetful Fred. “I can do that and, yes, you are right. That would not be a good thing to do.”

Sarah left. Forgetful Fred was distracted by a phone call, soon after she left. He walked away and forgot all about putting the trash in the garbage.

Later that evening, there was a knock at Forgetful Fred’s door. It was Environment Bug.

“I think you forgot something at the park earlier,” said Environment Bug, handing Forgetful Fred a bag with his trash in it.

“Oh no!” cried Forgetful Fred. “I am so sorry. Sarah asked me to take care of it but I was distracted by a phone call. I forgot all about it.”

“That does sound plausible,” said Environment Bug. “However, it is Earth Day. I want to make sure people are aware of the fact that their littering cannot be tolerated.”

“How about I clean up the park from litter this weekend to make up for it?” asked Forgetful Fred.

“That works,” said Environment Bug. “I will even come and remind you.”

“Remind you of what?” asked Sarah, seeing who Forgetful Fred was talking to.

“Oh,” said Forgetful Fred. “I was distracted by a phone call when we were at the park this afternoon and I forgot to put our litter in the trash. I am going to go to the park this weekend and clean up the park as a way of making up for my forgetfulness. Environment Bug offered to come and remind me so I would not forget to do it.”

“Oh, I don’t think Environment Bug will need to remind you,” said Sarah, sternly. “I think I have that covered myself.”

Saturday morning came and first thing Sarah did was remind Forgetful Fred to clean up the park. He went straight away and got it all cleaned up. He felt good doing something helpful and productive. Both Sarah and Environment Bug were very proud of him for keeping up his end of the bargain.

 

Moral of this Story:

  • Always put your litter in a trash bin.
  • Example: Forgetful Fred forgot to put his litter in the trash bin so he volunteered to clean up the park that next weekend.
