Harriet

“Mommy, what are we going to do to today?” asked four year old Harriet.

“We have to go shopping,” said Harriet’s Mommy, putting down the cup of coffee that she was drinking.

“What are we going shopping for?” asked Harriet.

“School clothes for you,” said Mommy.

“I don’t want school clothes,” said Harriet. “I don’t want to go to school.”

“Now, Harriet,” said Mommy. “You have to go to school. Besides, school is fun.”

“But Mommy,” said Harriet. “I am going to miss you.”

“Harriet,” said Mommy. “I don’t know how you are going to miss me. I’m your teacher, remember.”

”I know,” said Harriet. ”But when you are my teacher, I’m going to miss you as my Mommy.”

“Just because I am going to be your teacher, doesn’t mean that I stop being your Mommy,” said Mommy.

“Oh,” said Harriet. “Does that mean that you will always be my Mommy?”

“Yes,” said Mommy. “I am your Mommy forever. Nothing will ever change that.”

“Oh good,” said Harriet, happily.

Mommy and Harriet went shopping that afternoon. Harriet got to pick out lots of pretty dresses, a pair of pretty shoes and a new backpack.

”Mommy, can you show me how to tie my new shoes?” asked Harriet.

“Sure I can, sweetheart” said Mommy.

“I guess you will be my teacher for life, too,” said Harriet seriously.

“Yes Harriet,” said Mommy. “I guess you are right.”
