A Watermelon Kind of Day

Hillbilly Bob was sitting outside on his back porch. He was hoping there would be a breeze of some kind, but the wind was very still. It was the hottest day on record, according to the radio.

“I need something to help me cool down,” said Hillbilly Bob. “It is so hot.”

“How about a big thick slice of watermelon?” asked Mother, walking by the open kitchen door. “That should cool you down.”

“Watermelon,” said Hillbilly Bob. “Now that sounds really good.”

Mother went to the fridge to get the watermelon out so she could slice it up.

“Oh dear!” exclaimed Mother. “We are all out of watermelon. I could have sworn there was a whole one there earlier.”

“And I was really looking forward to some,” said Hillbilly Bob, disappointed.

“Actually, so was I,” said Mother.

“I could always run into town and pick one up,” said Hillbilly Bob.

“Do you have enough gas in your truck?” asked Mother.

“Yes,” said Hillbilly Bob. “I filled it up after work yesterday.”

“I don’t like the idea of you going all the way into town just for a watermelon,” said Mother.

“Do we need anything else?” asked Hillbilly Bob.

“Why don’t I come with you?” asked Mother. “That way we can pick up a couple things.”

“Okay,” said Hillbilly Bob, taking his straw hat off the wooden peg it was hanging on. “But we have to hurry. The store closes soon.”

Mother grabbed her change purse off the kitchen counter. She saw her reflection in the toaster.

“Oh dear,” said Mother. “My hair is a sight. I have to brush it.”

“Ma,” said Hillbilly Bob. “Your hair is fine. Come on. We have to go.”

Mother pulled her hair back and quickly ran her fingers through it. She followed Hillbilly Bob out to the truck.

“Oh look,” said Mother, pointing out the truck window as they drove up the driveway. “There’s your Pa sitting out behind the barn.”

Hillbilly Bob looked over to where his mother was pointing. His father was sitting in an old broken down wooden chair. He was eating something.

“It looks like he is eating watermelon,” said Hillbilly Bob.

“That is exactly what he is doing,” said Mother. “Looks like we don’t have to go to town after all.”

Hillbilly Bob parked the truck beside the barn and he and Mother got out.

“Where are you two headed?” asked Father. “Come and have a slice of watermelon with me.”

“We were going into town to buy another watermelon,” said Hillbilly Bob.

“We didn’t know what happened to the one that was in the fridge,” said Mother. “Until now.”

The Hillbilly family sat together outside of the barn, eating watermelon and enjoying each other’s company. The watermelon was cool and refreshing, and it sure did hit the spot.

“It sure is a watermelon kind of day,” said Father, eating the last slice.

“It sure is,” agreed Hillbilly Bob and Mother together.

“If it is hot like this tomorrow,” said Father. “I think tomorrow will be another watermelon kind of day.”

“I think I will get up nice and early tomorrow morning and go into town to buy a few watermelons,” said Mother.
