Winter Snow

Poor Mountain Mother was lying in bed on cool winter morning. She had just returned home from the hospital and had a cast put on her foot. She had broken her foot early that morning when she had tripped on the kitchen mat.

“Now,” said Poor Mountain Father, coming in to check up on her. “You just stay put. Doctors orders.”

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I know.”

Poor Mountain Mother looked out the bedroom window once Poor Mountain Father had left the room. She saw that it had started to snow.

“Oh my!” exclaimed Poor Mountain Mother. “Look at the beautiful snowfall and I am missing it.”

She watched the snow from her bedroom window and then just could not stand it any longer. She wanted to go outside and play in the snow so bad. She remembered as a kid going outside and playing in the snow. Everything always looked so fresh and clean.

“Where do you think you are going?” asked Poor Mountain Father, seeing Poor Mountain Mother standing in the hallway trying to make it down the stairs.

“I want to go play in the snow,” said Poor Mountain Mother.

“Oh no,” said Poor Mountain Father. “Get back into bed.”

“Am I too old to play in the snow?” asked Poor Mountain Mother.

“You are never too old to play in the snow,” said Poor Mountain Father, thinking about how he could bring the snow to Poor Mountain Mother. “You stay here. I have a surprise for you.”

Poor Mountain Mother reluctantly climbed back into bed. A few minutes later she couldn’t believe her eyes. Poor Mountain Father had brought a bucket of freshly fallen snow into the bedroom. Poor Mountain Mother squealed with delight as she stuck her hands in the bucket and put the snow all over her face.

“Does that make you feel better?” asked Poor Mountain Father, handing her a towel so she could dry off.

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “It does. Thank you so much.”
