Father’s Day Surprise
“Good morning,” said Poor Mountain Mother, when Poor Mountain Sister and Poor Mountain Brother came and sat down at the breakfast table.
“Good morning,” said both Poor Mountain children.
“Look,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I want to ask you two something before Poor Mountain Father comes downstairs.”
“Oh don’t worry,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
“Yeah,” said Poor Mountain Brother. “We’ve got it covered.”
“Oh okay,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “You are talking about Father’s Day right?”
“Absolutely,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “You don’t think that we would forget Father’s Day do you?”
“No,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “Of course not. I just wanted to make sure though. You know how Poor Mountain Father is about these kinds of things.”
“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “He’s already been asking questions.”
“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Father, walking into the kitchen. “Who has been asking questions?”
“You,” said Poor Mountain Brother, getting up from the table and grabbing his backpack.
Poor Mountain Sister grabbed her backpack too.
“Gotta go,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
“Don’t want to be late for school,” said Poor Mountain Brother.
“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Father, after they had left for school. “Something is up. What do you know about it?”
“All I know is that they’ve got it covered,” said Poor Mountain Mother.
“Hmmm…,” said Poor Mountain Father. “What are they up to?”
“They aren’t going to tell us,” said Poor Mountain Mother.
“Look,” said Poor Mountain Brother, laughing, while he saw his parents from the kitchen window. “It is killing them that we won’t tell them.”
“I know,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “This is going to be the best Father’s Day ever. Poor Mountain Father wants so bad to see Poor Mountain Grandfather and Poor Mountain Grandmother, especially after Poor Mountain Grandfather was so sick for those months. I’m just glad that he is well enough now to do this.”
Father’s Day rolled around and Poor Mountain Father and Poor Mountain Mother were beside themselves with wonder and anticipation.
“Good morning,” said Poor Mountain Sister and Poor Mountain Brother when their parents came downstairs.
“Wow!” exclaimed Poor Mountain Father, when he saw the breakfast the two children had prepared. “I’m impressed. This is the best Father’s Day ever.”
“This isn’t from us,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
Poor Mountain Mother cooked the breakfast.
“Oh,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I see.”
Poor Mountain Father and Poor Mountain Mother ate breakfast in silence. They could not for the life of them figure out what the Poor Mountain children were up to. Soon there was a knock at the door.
“Oh my!” exclaimed Poor Mountain Father when he answered the door.
There at the door were Poor Mountain Grandfather and Poor Mountain Grandmother.
“Happy Father’s Day!” they both exclaimed.
“Happy Father’s Day!” exclaimed the Poor Mountain children.
“Oh you two!” exclaimed Poor Mountain Father. “You two knew how much I wanted to see Poor Mountain Grandfather and Poor Mountain Grandmother. It is amazing that you could pull this off without us knowing anything about it. Now this is the best Father’s Day ever!”
