Home, Sweet Home
“That is strange,” said Iris Icicle. “My best friend, Chelsea Chickadee isn’t here yet. She is always here first thing in the morning. I am going to check on her.”
Iris Icicle, bundled up in her warm winter coat and boots, felt a sense of urgency. Despite the howling winds and swirling snow, she knew she had to be careful as they were in the midst of a winter storm. She trudged through the deep snow towards Chelsea’s tree, her concern growing with each step.
When Iris reached Chelsea’s tree, or what was left of it, she gasped. The tree had broken under the weight of the heavy snow, its branches splintered and scattered. Iris knew immediately that Chelsea’s home had been destroyed by the storm.
“Oh my!” Iris exclaimed, dropping to her knees and digging through the snow with her hands. “Where are you, Chelsea? You have to be okay!”
Her heart pounded as she searched frantically. Just then, Iris noticed a shadow fluttering above her head. She looked up and saw Chelsea Chickadee, her tiny wings beating against the wind.
“You’re alive!” Iris shouted, her voice filled with relief.
“I am!” cried Chelsea. “I heard the cracking of the tree branch and got out just in time.”
Iris carefully picked up Chelsea’s nest, which was surprisingly still intact.
“Come with me,” Iris said, her voice gentle yet firm.
Chelsea followed Iris back to her cozy little cottage-like home. Inside, Iris cleared a spot on the top of her bookcase and carefully placed Chelsea’s nest there.
“You can stay with me until spring,” Iris said, offering a warm smile.
Chelsea spent the rest of the winter with Iris, feeling warm and safe in her new home. As the days passed, their friendship grew stronger. When spring finally arrived, Iris realized how much she enjoyed having Chelsea with her and didn’t want her friend to leave.
One sunny morning, Iris went outside and gathered some twigs, dried grass, and a few strands of string. She brought them inside and presented them to Chelsea.
“What is this?” asked Chelsea, tilting her head in curiosity.
“Materials for you to build yourself a new nest,” said Iris. “You can replace the one on the bookshelf if you want.”
“Do you want me to stay?” Chelsea asked, her eyes shining with hope.
“Only if you want to,” Iris replied, her smile widening.
“Definitely,” said Chelsea. “I love living here with you.”
And so, Chelsea and Iris continued to live together, their bond growing ever stronger with each passing season. They faced every challenge side by side, knowing that no matter what storms came their way, they would always have each other to rely on.
