A Helping Hand

“I am getting old,” Uncle Cecil remarked to Aurora Fox, his voice laced with concern. “My eyesight is failing me, and I’m not doing a good job of providing for us. It’s hard to catch prey when you can’t see what’s right in front of you.”

Aurora Fox’s ears perked up with understanding. “I can help you, Uncle Cecil,” she said, her voice filled with determination. “I bet I can catch a few every day.”

Uncle Cecil’s face creased with worry. “I know you could, Aurora. But that’s not the life I want for you. I want you to have a better life than this.”

Aurora’s tail twitched with frustration. “You’ve been paying too much attention to humans, Uncle Cecil. Humans send their offspring to schools to be better educated. We don’t have that luxury. We are foxes, and foxes still have to hunt and gather our food. We also have to prepare for the coming winter. We don’t have the time or resources that humans have.”

Uncle Cecil sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. But Aurora’s words struck a chord within him. He thought long and hard about what she had said, and finally, he nodded in agreement.

“You’re right, Aurora,” he said, his voice filled with newfound determination. “We have to hold our heads high. We have to be proud of who we are.”

Aurora’s eyes shone with pride. “We are foxes, Uncle Cecil. And foxes are survivors. We will thrive in this wilderness, together.”

And so, Uncle Cecil let Aurora help him, and together, they hunted and gathered food for their den. They worked tirelessly, side by side, and their bond grew stronger with each passing day.

As the sun set on their first day of hunting together, Uncle Cecil handed Aurora two boiled eggs. “You did well today, Aurora,” he said, his eyes shining with pride. “These eggs are for you.”

Aurora’s ears perked up with delight. “Thank you, Uncle Cecil!” she exclaimed, her tail wagging with excitement. She devoured the eggs in mere moments, savoring the delicious taste.

“Those were the best eggs I’ve ever had!” she exclaimed, her tongue licking her lips.

Uncle Cecil chuckled, his eyes twinkling with warmth. “I’m glad you enjoyed them, Aurora. You deserve it. You’re a true fox, through and through.”

And with that, Aurora and Uncle Cecil settled down in their cozy den, their bellies full and their hearts content. They knew that as long as they had each other, they could face whatever challenges the wilderness threw their way.
