Wilted Sunflowers

It was a wet summer morning because it had just finished raining. Summer Sun was checking on the sunflowers around her to see if she needed to turn the summer thermostat up.

“So far,” said Summer Sun to her friend, Angela Ant. “I think the thermostat is at the right temperature.”

“You may want to take a look over this next ridge,” said Angela Ant, sheepishly.

“What has that nasty witch done this time?” asked Summer Sun. “I wish you would learn to stay away from her.”

Angela Ant had a bad habit of listening to Matilda the Witch. Angela has a hard time seeing the bad side of people. She believes what someone tells her to be true, and this has gotten Angela into so much trouble.

Matilda the Witch is jealous of Summer Sun. She is jealous over the fact that Summer Sun was put in charge of the summer thermostat for Storyland. Matilda wants to be in charge. She wants to be able to lower or raise the thermostat whenever she feels like it. She doesn’t want to have to ask someone else.

Summer Sun and Angela stepped over the ridge and gasped at the sight. An entire field of sunflowers were all wilted.

“What did she get you to do this time?” asked Summer Sun, knowing this could only be done by Matilda.

“She put a spell on me so I would do whatever she wanted me to do,” said Angela.

“And, let me guess,” said Summer Sun. “You turned the thermostat way up and you are still under her spell, so you can’t turn it down.”

“Yes,” said Angela. “That is correct.”

“You may not be able to turn the thermostat down,” said Summer Sun. “However, I sure can.”

Summer Sun turned the thermostat down and immediately the sunflowers perked right up. Sunflowers are Summer Sun’s favorite flower.

Summer Sun and Angela went to visit Matilda to tell her to stop messing with the thermostat.

“That was very cruel,” said Summer Sun. “Using a small, innocent creature, like Angela Ant, to make the sunflowers wilt.”

“I suppose you already turned it down,” said Matilda.

“I did,” admitted Summer Sun. “The sunflowers have perked right back up and are saved from your destructive behavior!”

“Oh my!” cried Matilda. “You have ruined my spell.”

“That spell of yours calls for sunflowers that grow straight into the air,” explained Summer Sun. “You ruined your own spell.”

Matilda looked up at Summer Sun and then turned to look at her spellbook.

“You are right,” Matilda cried, knowing she was to blame. “How did you know?”

“I have done my research on which spells you are likely to cast,” said Summer Sun.

“Oh,” was all Matilda could mutter.

“You shouldn’t be messing around with spells that you have no idea about,” Summer Sun scolded. “It is a very dangerous thing to do.”

Matilda put her spellbook away.

“I don’t know why you were trying to destroy sunflowers,” said Summer Sun. “They are used in a lot of spells. Were you just destroying them because you know I like them?”

Matilda shook her head. Summer Sun had found her out and she didn’t know what to say.

“No more spells,” said Summer Sun, leaving Matilda’s house.

“You were very brave confronting Matilda,” said Angela.

“Someone has to stop her,” said Summer Sun. “And together, we will make sure she doesn’t harm Storyland again.”

Summer Sun and Angela spent the rest of that day, dancing and singing with the sunflowers. They enjoyed themselves immensely.

Moral of this Story:

  • Always be cautious of whom you trust, and stand up against wrongdoing.
  • Example: Angela Ant’s trusting nature leads her into trouble because she believes Matilda the Witch. However, with Summer Sun’s help, they confront Matilda and stop her harmful actions.
