A Home Cooked Meal and Love

Crystal Frost strolled through the sliding glass doors of the grocery store with her Great Aunt Matty, the bright fluorescent lights overhead illuminating the bustling aisles. They had spent the morning making a list of essentials and were now on a mission to fill their cart with fresh produce, meats, and dairy products.

As they turned a corner, Aunt Matty suddenly stopped and grabbed Crystal’s arm.

“Is that who I think it is?” she asked, her eyes shining with excitement.

Crystal followed her aunt’s gaze and smiled.

“It is,” Crystal said, her voice barely above a whisper. “That’s Gerard, our new goalie for the Storyland Tales.”

Aunt Matty’s face lit up with a warm smile as she waved enthusiastically at Gerard.

“Oh Gerard!” she called out, completely embarrassing Crystal.

Gerard looked up, startled, and then broke into a wide smile as he spotted Aunt Matty and Crystal. He waved back, his eyes locking onto Crystal’s, and Crystal felt a flutter in her chest. Gerard walked over to them, his eyes never leaving Crystal’s face.

“I know who you two are,” he said, his voice filled with admiration. “You’re the only fans who cheer for us, no matter what.”

Aunt Matty chuckled, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

“There aren’t a lot of people who cheer for teams that don’t seem to win very often,” she said, her voice laced with sarcasm.

Gerard laughed, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

“We’re hoping to turn that around,” he said, his voice filled with determination.

As they chatted, Aunt Matty couldn’t help but peek into Gerard’s shopping basket. Her eyes widened in surprise as she saw that all he had was a bunch of greens.

“How are you ever going to win if all you eat are greens?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. Gerard chuckled, looking a bit sheepish.

“I guess I need to fuel up with some better food,” he said.

Aunt Matty’s face lit up with a warm smile.

“Why don’t you come over for a home-cooked meal?” she asked, her eyes sparkling with invitation.

Gerard’s eyes locked onto Crystal’s, and he smiled.

“Will you be there too?” he asked, his voice filled with hope.

Aunt Matty nodded, seeing the spark of attraction between Gerard and Crystal.

“My niece will be there too,” she said, her voice filled with amusement.

Gerard’s face lit up with excitement.

“I would love to join you for dinner,” he said, his voice filled with gratitude.

Aunt Matty wrote down their address and handed it to him.

“See you at 7,” she said, smiling.

As Gerard walked away, Crystal turned to her aunt, her eyes wide with surprise.

“Aunt Matty!” she scolded, laughing. “What are you thinking?”

Aunt Matty chuckled, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

“Did you see what the poor boy was going to eat?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. “It’s no wonder the Storyland Tales lose! Those boys need to eat better.”

Crystal laughed, shaking her head.

“And what about the fact that you were clearly matchmaking?” she asked, her voice filled with amusement.

Aunt Matty smiled, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

“Did you not see him?” she asked, her voice filled with excitement. “He couldn’t take his eyes off you. Maybe a good meal and good company will help that young goalie and the rest of the team win.”

Gerard showed up precisely at 7, bearing a beautiful bouquet of flowers for Aunt Matty. He thoroughly enjoyed the roast beef dinner, and he was enchanted by Crystal’s warm smile and sparkling eyes. As the evening drew to a close, Gerard thanked Aunt Matty for the delicious meal and Crystal for the wonderful company.

This became a routine, every Sunday night, Gerard joining Aunt Matty and Crystal for dinner. And just as Aunt Matty had predicted, the Storyland Tales did start winning, their newfound success fueled by Gerard’s improved eating habits and the love and support of Aunt Matty and Crystal.

As the weeks turned into months, Crystal and Gerard grew closer, their friendship blossoming into something more. Aunt Matty smiled knowingly, happy to have played a part in bringing the two together. And as they all sat down to enjoy another delicious Sunday dinner, Crystal turned to Gerard and smiled.

“I’m so glad Aunt Matty invited you over for dinner that day,” she said, her eyes sparkling with happiness.

Gerard smiled back, his eyes filled with love and gratitude.

“Me too,” he said, taking Crystal’s hand in his. “Me too.”
