Breezy Sloth and a Bowl of Salad

Breezy Sloth was enjoying a leisurely summer day, hanging from a branch in a very tall tree. This was one of his most favorite things to do.

“This is such a beautiful summer day,” said Breezy Sloth to himself. “I love summer. I love the fact that there are many lazy, hazy summer days. Being a sloth, those kinds of days are definitely the kind of days that I can relate to.”

It was soon time for Breezy Sloth to have his lunch, so he very slowly and very carefully climbed down from the tree he was in and then climbed up into his most favorite type of tree. By the time Breezy Sloth climbed down one tree and climbed up another, he knew lunch time was over, but he didn’t really care. He took his time eating because he really didn’t have a care in the world.

“I have nothing else to do with my time,” said Breezy Sloth. “I don’t have any important appointments. I have absolutely nowhere else to be. In fact, I haven’t a care in the world.”

Breezy took his time eating, chewing his food ever so slowly and then swallowing with the utmost care, making sure he didn’t choke. After lunch, he painstakingly made his way to a creek bed so he could get a drink of water. He would slowly take one paw, slowly dip it into the water, and then slowly and carefully bring it up to his mouth and drink it.

“Oh, that water sure does taste good,” said Breezy Sloth.

Once he had his fill of water, he slumped down beside the creek and fell asleep in the long, cool grass.

“Oh, Mr. Sloth,” someone shouted in his ear. Breezy, very slowly, opened his eyes and was surprised to see a young girl staring at him.

“You can’t sleep here,” said the young girl.

“Oh, and why not?” said Breezy, now fully awake.

“My family is going to have a picnic here, and I would be afraid that you might get stepped on.”

Being stepped on was not something he wanted to experience, so he found the closest tree to where he was and slowly climbed it. The little girl was going to protest, but she had just seen what effort Breezy had made to climb that tree, so she decided to let him be.

“Besides,” she said to herself. “Just how much trouble could a sloth get into?”

The little girl’s family arrived, and they had all the most delicious foods to eat. Breezy couldn’t believe just how much food there was. Breezy spotted a huge bowl of salad, and it looked so yummy. It just happened to be right within his reach. Breezy reached down with one paw ever so slowly. He was so slow that not a single person saw him. He reached into the bowl to take a small handful, but then he and everyone else heard a very loud cracking noise. His branch had let go, and soon Breezy was sitting in the middle of the salad bowl.

Everyone looked at Breezy and then they started to laugh. They fed Breezy the salad that was in that bowl, and Breezy was in his glory. He had never been so happy, surrounded by delicious food and friendly laughter. As the sun began to set, Breezy Sloth knew that this was a day he would never forget.
