No Regrets for the Past

“Oh, Aurora!” exclaimed Mrs. Beacon, the wife of a neighboring farmer. “It is nice to see you out and about on this beautiful autumn day. I have been meaning to ask you how your Uncle Cecil has been. I haven’t seen him in a while, and I did hear he was sick.”

“He is doing much better these past few days,” said Aurora Fox, her eyes brightening with relief.

“I am so happy to hear that,” said Mrs. Beacon with a warm smile. “He is such a cunning fox but also a very hard worker.”

“Yes,” said Aurora, nodding. “He sure is.”

Mrs. Beacon went inside her cozy farmhouse and motioned for Aurora to wait. She soon returned with a basket of fresh, glistening eggs and handed them to Aurora.

“Please give these to Uncle Cecil for me,” winked Mrs. Beacon. “Tell him his debt is now paid in full and that if he wants more work, we have plenty.”

Aurora took the basket of eggs and made her way to Uncle Cecil’s small, rustic den. She found him sitting on the porch, enjoying the afternoon sun.

“So,” said Aurora, handing the basket to her uncle. “More of your life’s secrets have unfolded. The eggs are from Mrs. Beacon.”

“Oh,” said Uncle Cecil bashfully, his ears twitching. “I guess you are old enough now, to know how I have been taking care of you all these years.”

“Please tell me,” said Aurora, her curiosity piqued.

Uncle Cecil took a deep breath and began to recount his story. He told Aurora about how he took her in after her parents had passed and how he vowed to do right by her.

“I wasn’t always a good fox,” explained Uncle Cecil, his voice tinged with regret. “I used to steal eggs from the Beacons, and one day they caught me. They also knew, though, that I had been helping them by catching little critters that were eating their feed and stealing their eggs. So, they hired me to be in charge of pest control.”

“Oh, Uncle Cecil!” cried Aurora, her eyes welling up with tears. “You don’t have to be ashamed of your past. From what I see, you have earned respect in this community. I am proud of you.”

“I believe I have raised you right,” said Uncle Cecil, his voice filled with pride. “You don’t have to steal food. You have a bright future ahead of you.”

“That is because of you,” said Aurora proudly.

Aurora hugged her uncle tightly, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and love. As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the fields, Aurora and Uncle Cecil sat together, knowing that their bond was stronger than ever. They had faced hardships, but together, they had built a life filled with love, respect, and hope for the future.
