Father’s Day Surprise in the Mountains

“I see it is almost the 3rd weekend in June,” said Poor Mountain Father, looking at the calendar.

“So,” said Poor Mountain Mother, nervously.

“Well isn’t that Father’s Day,” said Poor Mountain Father.

“Mom,” said Poor Mountain Sister.

Poor Mountain Mother put her finger to her lips to hush her children.

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “Father’s Day is coming up.”

“Do we have anything planned for that weekend?” asked Poor Mountain Father.

“No,” said Poor Mountain Mother, looking over her shoulder at the disappointed look on the faces of her three children. “We have nothing planned.”

“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Father. “Please keep it that way. I don’t want any surprises.”

“Mom,” said Poor Mountain Sister, again.

Poor Mountain Mother put her fingers to her lips again, hushing her children.

“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “We won’t plan anything. Are you sure this is what you want? The children are going to be really disappointed.”

“Oh,” said Poor Mountain Father. “So you did have something planned?”

“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “Yes, we do have something planned.”

“Well,” said Poor Mountain Father. “Please cancel your plans.”

“The kids are going to be disappointed,” said Poor Mountain Mother.

“Trust me,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I will make it up to them and to you as well.”

Poor Mountain Father walked out of the house. The children were very disappointed and they had a lot of questions.

“Why is he doing this?” asked Poor Mountain Sister.

“What about all the plans we have made so far?” asked Poor Mountain Brother.

“You know something,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I think your Father has something planned for Father’s Day.”

“Like what?” asked Poor Mountain Brother.

“I don’t know,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I guess we will just have to wait and see.”

Father’s Day morning rolled around and Poor Mountain Father was still in bed.

“What?” asked Poor Mountain Father, when the children came into the bedroom to wish him a Happy Father’s Day. “Don’t I at least get breakfast in bed?”

“No,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “You told us not to plan anything.”

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Father, laughing. “I did say that.”

“What is so funny?” asked Poor Mountain Mother, coming into the bedroom and opening up the curtains.

“Well,” said Poor Mountain Father, getting out of bed. “I would just like to thank you for cancelling your plans for Father’s Day. I just feel so happy and privileged to have such a wonderful family. I wanted to do something special for all of you because I want to show you how grateful I am to be your father. I want everyone to go get dressed. We have a lot planned for today.”

The first thing Poor Mountain Father did while waiting for his family to get dressed was to cook them all breakfast. After breakfast, he took them to the mall. He bought Poor Mountain Sister the doll he knew she had been eyeing for the past few months. He then bought Poor Mountain Brother and Poor Mountain Baby a new toy that they have wanted. He also bought Poor Mountain Mother a new dress.

For lunch, he took his family on a picnic in the mountains. The Poor Mountain family had a great day with Poor Mountain Father.

“I am so proud of you,” said Poor Mountain Mother later that evening, once the children had gone to bed. “You turned Father’s Day into much more than I ever thought possible.”

“You and the children are my world,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I just wanted to show all of you just how much I love you.”

“You have done that,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “We love you so much!”
