Poor Mountain Family’s March Break

“So next week the Poor Mountain children are home from school,” said Poor Mountain Mother.

“How come?” asked Poor Mountain Father, reading the newspaper.

“It is March Break,” said Poor Mountain Mother.

“Well aren’t they lucky,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I wish I could have a March Break.”

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “That would be great, wouldn’t it?”

“You know,” said Poor Mountain Father, laying the paper down. “I do have a week’s holidays from last year that I haven’t used up.”

“Really?” asked Poor Mountain Mother, her eyes lighting up.

“Why don’t we spend March Break as a family,” said Poor Mountain Father. “You know, do something together with the children.”

“I’m sure the children will love it,” said Poor Mountain Mother, smiling.

Poor Mountain Father and Poor Mountain Mother told the Poor Mountain children all about their plan for March Break that afternoon, as soon as they got home from school.

“That sounds like a lot of fun,” said Poor Mountain Sister.

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Brother. “You mean, like doing stuff together right, as a family?”

“That is right,” said Poor Mountain Father. “We can do all kinds of things, like skate, ski, toboggan and also, the most important thing, we can spend it together as a family.”

“I can’t wait for March Break to come,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “We are going to have so much fun.”

On the Monday of March Break, the Poor Mountain Family went skiing. They had a riot. None of them had ever gone skiing before, except for Poor Mountain Brother. He was able to show the rest of the family how to ski. The Tuesday, they went skating. The Wednesday, they went toboggan. The Thursday, it rained the whole day, so the Poor Mountain Family spent the day inside playing board games and just having a lot of fun together. The Friday, Poor Mountain Sister had wanted to go horse-back riding for a long, long time and Poor Mountain Father decided that this would be the best time to do it. The weekend came and the Poor Mountain Family spent most of it cleaning up the house together, baking together and doing yard work together.

“Well,” said Poor Mountain Father to the Poor Mountain children. “I don’t know about you, but I had a lot of fun on March Break.”

“It was awesome,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “I can’t wait until March Break next year.”

“Yeah,” said Poor Mountain Brother. “Me too! Now we will have a whole year to plan activities instead of just a few days.”

“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Father, whispering to Poor Mountain Mother. “And a whole year to save up enough money to do all this.”
