Chester Chipmunk Meets Eager Eagle

“Hey there little chipmunk,” Chester heard a voice say to him.

Chester Chipmunk looked everywhere but he could not see where the voice was coming from. All of a sudden, the sky turned black and he saw this huge shadow down around him. Chester looked up into the sky and was shocked to see the most beautiful bald eagle hovering over him.

“Hi there!” exclaimed Chester, who was more in awe of this beautiful bird than in fear. “My! You sure are a beautiful bird!”

“Why thank you,” said the bald eagle, landing right beside Chester. “By the way, my name is Eager Eagle. What is your name?”

“I’m Chester Chipmunk,” said Chester Chipmunk. “It is so nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure is all mine,” said Eager Eagle, holding out his sharp claw for Chester Chipmunk to shake.

“Hey, wait a minute,” said Chester Chipmunk. “You aren’t being nice to me so that you eat me, are you?”

“Oh no,” laughed Eager Eagle. “I want to be your friend.”

“Okay,” said Chester Chipmunk, shaking Eager Eagle’s sharp claw, but being very careful not to hurt himself.

“They are kind of sharp,” said Eager Eagle.

“You can say that again,” laughed Chester Chipmunk. “So what brings you out on this cold January day?”

“I’m just on my way to sit in my tree,” said Eager Eagle. “I sit there and watch over the banks of the river for food. What are you doing out and about? I thought chipmunks hibernated.”

“We do,” said Chester Chipmunk. “However, it was so warm earlier that I wanted to get out and stretch a little bit.”

“I see,” said Eager Eagle. “I love the warm weather.”

“Oh me too,” said Chester Chipmunk. “In the warm weather I collect acorns.”

“Yes,” said Eager Eagle. “That is true. I’ve heard that about chipmunks. I don’t collect anything at all. I just hunt for fish and mice.”

“I would imagine that it would be hard to hunt for fish at this time of the year,” laughed Chester Chipmunk.

“Yes,” said Eager Eagle. “It is. I don’t actually eat fish in the winter. However, come spring and summer, I get to eat all the fish I want.”

“What kind of fish?” asked Chester Chipmunk.

“Salmon,” said Eager Eagle.

“I bet they are tasty,” said Chester Chipmunk. “I’ve never actually eaten any salmon before because I’m not a meat eater but if I did eat fish, I think salmon would be the one that I would chose.”

“Good choice,” said Eager Eagle, spotting a mouse way off in the distance. “Well, Chester Chipmunk. I’ve got to go hunting now. Take care and hopefully we will meet again.”

“Yes,” said Chester Chipmunk. “I’m sure we will.”
