Spooky Alley

It was Halloween night and Douglas showed up at Eunice’s door with his trick-or-treat bag wide open hoping to get some more candy. As soon as Eunice saw him, she dragged him by the arm and pulled him inside.

“Douglas,” said Eunice. “What are you doing trick-or-treating at my door? I thought we were going to go trick-or-treating together. Remember our plans.”

“Yes Eunice,” said Douglas. “I remember your plans. I never totally agreed on them.”

“You are such a chicken,” said Eunice, angrily, putting her hands on her hips and pouting. “You stood right in the school playground at lunch and told me you would go with me.”

“Yes,” said Douglas. “I did tell you that because I don’t want you going to Spooky Alley all by yourself. However, I still don’t think it is such a good idea.”

“There’s nothing spooky about Spooky Alley,” said Eunice. “Don’t tell me you believe all those horror stories about that place?”

“Yeah I do,” said Douglas, not wanting to lie to his best friend.

“Well don’t,” said Eunice. “It is all nonsense. That place is not haunted and is not scary, either.”

“I don’t want to go,” said Douglas.

“You are coming,” said Eunice. “You promised and you can’t break a promise.”

Eunice grabbed Douglas by the arm again and led him toward the front door. They walked down the street, watching all the trick-or-treaters. Eunice turned the corner onto Spooky Alley and she noticed that all of a sudden she could see the full moon shining. She also saw orange, red and yellow leaves floating through the air as they were blown off a maple tree with a wind that didn’t seem to be there before, either. Douglas felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand straight up.

“Eunice,” said Douglas. “I want to go home.”

“Come on,” said Eunice, pulling on Douglas’ arm to make him run faster. “We’ve got some trick-or-treating to do.”

Eunice didn’t stop running until they were standing outside the only house that was on Spooky Alley. She could see a large jack-o-lantern on the front lawn. There was a black fence all around the whole property and she noticed that it was covered in cob webs. She saw a huge bat flying just above the rooftop and spooky, eerie music was coming from the front door. She saw what looked like a witch coming through the front door. The witch opened her mouth to speak and Eunice noticed the witches tongue was green. All of a sudden, Eunice didn’t feel so good and she bolted home, just as fast as she could. It took everything in Douglas just to keep up with her.

“What is wrong?” asked Douglas. “I thought we were going to trick-or-treat in Spooky Alley.”

“Maybe next year,” said Eunice, whose face was as white as a ghost. “Maybe.”
