A Sick Groundhog

“I feel sick today,” said the groundhog on Groundhog Day. “I will let the crowd celebrate Groundhog Day without me. I am going back to bed.”

There was a crowd outside. They were waiting to see if the groundhog would see his shadow or not. They didn’t want him to see his shadow because they wanted an early spring.

“Where is the groundhog?” the crowd shouted. “We didn’t miss him, did we?”

“No,” said someone else in the crowd. ‘ ‘We just haven’t seen him yet.”

The crowd waited and waited and still no groundhog. They were starting to become impatient.

Meanwhile, in a den not far from where the groundhog was, there was a prairie dog den that was occupied by Peter Prairie Dog. Peter Prairie Dog watched from his den. He could see the groundhog was late and he could see the crowd was becoming impatient.

“This might be my perfect opportunity for me to shine and show everyone a prairie dog is just as important on Groundhog Day as a groundhog,” said Peter Prairie Dog.

Peter Prairie Dog waited just a few more minutes but then he saw the crowd was starting to leave. He did the only thing he could do. He popped his head out of his den.

“Oh look!” someone pointed. “It’s a prairie dog. It doesn’t look like he sees his shadow. Is he as good as a groundhog for predicting an early spring?”

“Why not,” someone else said. “He doesn’t see his shadow and I don’t know about you but I need an early spring. So, I say let the prairie dog be the groundhog for the day.”

Everyone cheered. Peter Prairie Dog was very proud of himself. He was starting to give prairie dogs a good reputation for Groundhog Day.
