Boxing Day

“Fawn,” said Spot. “I am going shopping. Do you want to come?”

“Are you just going grocery shopping?” asked Fawn.

“No,” said Spot. “I’m going Christmas shopping.”

“What!” exclaimed Fawn. “Christmas shopping! It is only the day after Christmas. Why are you going Christmas shopping?”

“Because today is Boxing Day,” said Spot.

“What is Boxing Day?” asked Fawn.

“Well,” said Spot. “In the olden days, Christmas boxes were given to the postman, boys that do errands and employees but now Boxing Day is a huge shopping day. There are tons of sales on and you can really save a lot of money.”

“Oh,” said Fawn, his ears perking up when he heard that he could save money. “Okay I’ll come with you.”

Fawn was shocked when they got to the parking lot of the mall. He couldn’t believe the number of cars that were there. He was also shocked when he saw the mayhem inside the mall. It was packed and at each store there were lineups all the way out into the hallways. Fawn saw signs everywhere of merchants offering very big discounts on their products.

“Oh Spot,” said Fawn. “Look, you can buy a whole DVD player for like $19.99! I want to buy one with the money Grampy gave me for Christmas.”

“Okay,” said Spot. “But you’d better hurry or else they’ll be gone quick.”

Fawn went inside the electronic store and Spot was right. Before he could get to the DVD players for $19.99, all kinds of people had snatched them up. Fawn noticed one box sitting behind another stack of DVD players that were a little more expensive. He picked that box up and luckily for Fawn it was one of the ones on sale for $19.99.

“Look,” said Fawn, showing Spot after he had purchased it. “I was lucky. I found this one just laying there.”

“You were lucky,” said Spot. “Very lucky.”

Fawn loved Boxing Day and he couldn’t wait until the next year to go shopping again.
