Easter Dress
Poor Mountain Mother was sitting at the sewing machine when Poor Mountain Sister walked by the sewing room.
“Does your Easter dress from last year still fit you?” asked Poor Mountain Mother.
“I don’t know if it does or not,” said Poor Mountain Sister. “I will go try it on.”
Poor Mountain Sister went and tried her dress on and both Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Sister burst out laughing. The dress was way too small. Poor Mountain Sister couldn’t even do it up at the back.
“Time for a new Easter dress,” said Poor Mountain Mother.
Poor Mountain Sister was very excited that she was going to get a new Easter dress.
“Can I pick out the fabric for it?” asked Poor Mountain Sister.
“Not this time,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I have the perfect fabric picked out already.”
“Oh okay,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
Poor Mountain Sister was thinking that the only fabric Poor Mountain Mother had was a bright yellow fabric that she didn’t like. However, because she knew that her family didn’t have very much money, there was no
Poor Mountain Mother spent the better part of the next week measuring and sewing, all without Poor Mountain Sister ever seeing the dress itself.
Easter morning came and Poor Mountain Mother stood in the doorway of Poor Mountain Sister’s room. She had the dress on a hanger. When Poor Mountain Sister saw the dress her mouth dropped to the floor.
“Oh Poor Mountain Mother,” she cried. “I love it, but I thought you were going to use this purple fabric for yourself.”
“I was going to,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “However, I thought it would look much better on you.”
“I love you,” said Poor Mountain Sister, giving Poor Mountain Mother a hug.
“I love you too,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “Happy Easter!”
“This is the best Easter ever,” said Poor Mountain Sister, hugging the dress.
