Dancing Lights

“I’m tired Mommy!” yawned six year old, Johnny from the back seat of the car.

“Close your eyes and get some sleep,” said Mommy. “We still have a long trip ahead of us.”

“Mommy’s right,” said Daddy, driving the car. “Grandma’s farm is still miles away.”

Johnny closed his eyes and immediately fell asleep.

“Oh look,” said Mommy, a few minutes later. “He’s sound asleep!”

Daddy took a quick look in the rear-view mirror at his son.

“He look like an angel,” said Daddy, turning his eyes back to the road.

“I’m so glad that we are finally able to take Johnny out to the farm,” said Mommy. “It is such a beautiful summer day to travel too. Mamma and Papa are going to be thrilled to see us!”

“Well, this is a trip we should have taken years ago,” said Daddy.

“Yes, but as hard as we tried to get away, something always came up,” said Mommy. “I just know that Mamma and Papa are going to love you and Johnny right away.”

“Well, I sure hope so,” said Daddy, laughing. “I married their daughter.”

“You know,” said Mommy, nostalgically. “I remember the night before I left the farm to go to college. Papa and I were standing in the back porch, looking up into the sky. Papa had specifically come out onto the porch to give me a lecture about how to behave myself in the big city. He started talking about little things, like the farm and how happy he and Mamma were. I knew he was heading toward a lecture. Whenever Papa gave me a lecture, he would start off with small talk.”

“My Dad was never like that,” said Daddy. “He never beat around the bush. If he had something to say to me, he always said it.”

“Well, anyway,” said Mommy. “Papa and I were standing out on the back porch talking. All of a sudden the sky started to dance. ‘Oh Papa,’ I said. ‘Look up in the sky. There’s the dancing lights.’ Papa was so excited. We just stood there for the longest time looking up into the sky. You know, I never did get that lecture!”

“Really, said Daddy. “All because of some dancing lights!”

“What are dancing lights?” asked Johnny, suddenly waking up.

“Dancing lights are actually called Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis,” explained Daddy. “On some clear nights, if you look up into the sky, you will see lights dancing across the sky.”

“They are the most beautiful and most wonderful thing that you will ever see,” said Mommy.

In the next few hours, they were driving up a long, winding driveway. Grandma and Grandpa stood on the back porch, when they saw the lights of a car coming up the driveway.

“They are here!” exclaimed Grandma, excitedly. “Oh, I can’t wait to see my little grandson!”

Johnny was the first one out of the car. He ran as quickly as he could up the stairs to the back porch, where his grandparents stood.

“Hi Grandma and Grandpa,” said Johnny. “I’m Johnny, your grandson.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, young man,” said Grandpa.

Mommy and Daddy came up the stairs at that moment.

“I see you have already met Johnny,” said Mommy. “Mamma and Papa, this is Danny.”

Grandma and Grandpa stood shaking Daddy’s hand, hugging Mommy and talking with Johnny. A few minutes later, Grandma excused herself and went into the kitchen to bring everyone something to eat.

“Hey Mommy,” said Johnny, standing on the porch beside Grandpa. “Is this the place where Grandpa was going to give you that lecture?”

Mommy’s face turned red.

“You know something,” said Grandpa, with a serious look on his face. “This is the very spot. I never did give you that lecture, Mary, now did I?”

“Now Papa,” blushed Mommy. “I don’t think I need a lecture.”

“No maybe not,” said Grandpa.

“Wow, look!” exclaimed Johnny, looking up into the sky. “There’s those dancing lights, Mommy!”

“Yes,” said Mommy, fascinated. “There they are. What a beautiful sight!”

“I guess they are welcoming you back home,” said Grandma, coming out of the house with a tray full of goodies.”

“See Mary,” said Grandpa. “Even the dancing lights missed you.”
