My Backyard
It was a nice warm June day. I had just gotten home from work and decided that I would spend a few hours enjoying my backyard.
I took my cell phone and Pocket PC out of my briefcase. Then I grabbed an ice cold drink out of the fridge and headed outside. It sure was nice to relax and enjoy the warm sunshine.
I was busy reading some offline web content on my Pocket PC when my cell phone rang.
“Hi honey!” my boyfriend, Mark, said to me on the other end of the phone.
”Hi yourself,” I replied, happy to hear his voice.
“Boy,” said Mark. “You sure sound like you are in a good mood. What are you doing?”
“I’m sitting outside in my backyard, reading offline web content on my Pocket PC and enjoying an ice cold Coke,” I said.
“Sounds like fun,” said Mark.
“It is,” l said. “So how was your…OUCH!”
I dropped the cell phone on my lap. There, at the bottom of my lounge chair was a troll biting my toe.
“What are you doing!” I cried, trying with no luck to shake the troll off my toe. “Boy for a tiny little thing, your teeth are sure sharp.”
“Julie,” said Mark, through the cell phone that was now lying on the ground. “What’s going on over there? Are you alright? Did I hear you say trolls? Those pesky little creatures aren’t bothering you again, are they? Julie, talk to me!”
Well, I didn’t hear Mark. I was too busy screaming and kicking. I couldn’t believe that the trolls were actually biting me. We usually got along fairly well. Well, almost fairly well.
l finally got the last troll off my toes.
“Now, what is going on here?” I demanded to know.
“You didn’t leave us a birthday present,” said Red, the troll with the red hair.
“What!” I exclaimed. “In the two whole times that we have actually met, we have never exchanged information such as birthdays.”
“Well, we know your birthday,” said Orange, the troll with the orange hair.
“How could you know my birthday?” I asked.
“Red looked in your wallet,” said Lime, the troll with the lime hair.
“What were you doing in my wallet?” I asked, angrily, looking right at Red, who was trying to hide behind his two brothers.
“I was looking for some money,” said Red. “That’s when I saw your birth certificate.”
“So you guys think that you can just take whatever you want, without asking first, eh!” I screamed. “Well that is going to stop.”
Just then Mark showed up with a bundle of orange fur in his arms. When Mark let Fluffy go, I never saw three trolls run as fast as Red, Orange and Lime just did.
“Julie,” said Mark, who was quite concerned. “Are you alright?”
“Yes,” I said. “I think I will be just fine.”
“But your toe is bleeding,” said Mark.
”It will be alright,” I said, more interested in what Fluffy was doing on the ground.
Fluffy was running all over the yard,
looking for the three trolls.
”A cat,” I said to myself. “That is exactly what I need.”
“Look Julie,” said Mark, heading toward my back door. ”I am going to bandage your toe for you.”
“After that, I need you to do me a favour,” I said. “I need you to take me to the animal shelter.”
Mark bandaged my toe and then, reluctantly, took me to the animal shelter.
“I need a cat,” I said to the receptionist. “I need a big mean one.”
“We have just the one for you,” said the receptionist. “George!”
The receptionist went into the back room and came out with the sweetest little kitten I had ever seen.
“How could this little kitten hurt a flea?” I asked.
I reached over to pet George on his head. Claws went flying, fur went straight up.
“I’ll take him,” I said.
About a week later, I was once again enjoying my back yard. This time, there were no trolls to be found anywhere. As a matter of fact, George was so nasty that Mark won’t even come over.
