Winter Kindness
It was a very cold winter day in Toronto, Ontario. Subway Sam was on the subway on his way to work. Because he knew that sometimes subways are very cold in the winter, he had a blanket with him in his backpack.
“Oh my!” exclaimed Subway Sam. “It appears there is no heat on this subway this morning. It is so cold!”
For most people, it wasn’t that much of a problem because a few stops and they were at their destination. However, Subway Sam was coming into downtown Toronto from Scarborough. It was a fairly long ride.
Subway Sam was just about to wrap his blanket around himself when he spotted an elderly woman sitting on the seat across from him. She was so cold that she was shivering and her teeth were chattering. He got up from his seat and offered the blanket to her.
“Oh young man,” said the woman. “Normally, I would refuse to take this but the cold has really gotten to me today. “Thank you!”
“You are welcome,” said Subway Sam.
“You are that kind soul that helps people on the subway,” said the woman, recognizing him. “You are Subway Sam!”
“Yes,” said Subway Sam. “That is me.”
“I see you almost every morning,” said the woman. “My name is Gladys. I have seen you help so many people.”
“Thank you Gladys,” said Subway Sam. “It is nice to meet you.”
Gladys got off at the next stop and gave Subway Sam his blanket back.
“I am forever grateful for what you did for me today,” said Gladys. “I don’t know how I will ever repay you.”
“Just stay warm,” said Subway Sam.
The next day, Gladys saw Subway Sam and handed him a large bag. He was shocked to see a hand-knitted afghan in rich blue and green colors.
“This is too much,” said Subway Sam, trying to give the bag back to her. “I can’t accept this.”
“I have tons of these,” said Gladys. “I knit so quickly. You will be doing me a favour by taking it.”
“It is very beautiful,” said Subway Sam. “Thank you very much.”
“Just one thing,” said Gladys. “I don’t want to see you using that afghan here. You must take it home and use it there.”
“I will,” said Subway Sam. “Thank you so much.”
