Baseball
“There is a baseball tournament this Saturday,” said Poor Mountain Father. “Does anyone want to go?”
“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Brother. “I do.”
“Me too,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
“Let’s make a whole day out of it,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “We could have a barbecue picnic at the park.”
“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Father. “That would be great.”
There was a knock on the front door of the cabin that the Poor Mountain Family lived in.
“Oh,” said Poor Mountain Mother, opening the door. “It is our new neighbour, Mr. Peters.”
“Come on in,” waved Poor Mountain Father to his neighbour.
“I have a question to ask,” said Mr. Peters. “Our family is wanting to play in the baseball tournament this Saturday. We need four more players for our team. Would your family be interested in teaming up with mine.”
The Poor Mountain Family all stood there shaking their heads up and down.
“Looks like we are going to play ball,” said Poor Mountain Father.
“Awesome,” said Mr. Peters. “See you on Saturday.”
“This is going to be fun,” said Poor Mountain Mother.
“I think so too,” said Poor Mountain Father.
Poor Mountain Father took Poor Mountain Brother and Poor Mountain Sister out to the back shed. He found an old box that contained some really worn out, but still good, baseball gloves. Poor Mountain Sister went to grab one from the table that Poor Mountain Father had laid it down on, when she tripped.
“Are you okay?” asked Poor Mountain Father, bending down beside where she lay.
“I’m fine,” said Poor Mountain Sister, attempting to get up. “OUCH!!!”
Poor Mountain Sister’s right ankle was very, very sore. It was starting to swell up.
“Ice,” said Poor Mountain Father to Poor Mountain Brother. “She needs some ice on that ankle right away.”
Poor Mountain Brother went up to the cabin to get some ice for his sister. Poor Mountain Mother was in the kitchen. When she heard what happened to Poor Mountain Sister she went down to the back shed with him.
Poor Mountain Sister was crying in pain and her ankle was still swelling up, even with the ice on it. Poor Mountain Father took her to the hospital. Luckily for Poor Mountain Sister, she didn’t break her ankle but she did sprain it pretty bad. The emergency room doctor bandaged up her ankle and told her to stay off it for a few weeks.
“What about baseball?” asked Poor Mountain Sister. “How can I play baseball?”
“I have an idea,” said Poor Mountain Father.
Saturday came and the Poor Mountain Family was very excited about playing baseball. They had never played as a family before and were really looking forward to it. Poor Mountain Sister, however, was still aching quite a bit from her sprained ankle.
The time came for Poor Mountain Sister to be up at bat. Poor Mountain Father carried her out to the field to the pitcher’s mound. He set her down on the ground but held her by the waist.
“Are you okay?” asked Poor Mountain Father.
“Yes,” said Poor Mountain Sister.
Poor Mountain Father handed the bat to her and Poor Mountain Sister took a swing. She hit the ball fairly hard and it caused their team to get a home run. That home run won the tournament for them.
