Ouch!
“Fawn, put your hat on,” said Spot, watching her friend leave the barn. “Mr. Hansen said it is cold out today.”
“Oh,” said Fawn. “Stop worrying about me. I will be just fine.”
“Okay,” said Spot, angry at her friend for not listening to her. “If you get sick, don’t you come crying to me.”
“I’m not going to get sick,” said Fawn. “Besides I’m only going up to the Hansen’s house and back.”
Fawn stepped outside and the minute he did, he wished he’d listened to Spot. It was very cold outside and the wind was just tearing through him. However, he didn’t want to go back inside because that would mean that Spot would have been right and there was no way that Fawn could ever let Spot know she was right. He would never be able to live that down.
Fawn pulled his jacket up over his ears but still, that wasn’t enough to keep his ears warm. By the time he reached the Hansen’s house, Fawn could feel his ears ringing from the cold.
“Fawn,” said Spot, later on in the day. “Do you want to go outside and play? The sun has been shining for about an hour now so it must be a lot warmer than it was earlier.”
“No,” said Fawn. “I think I’d rather just stay inside.”
“You aren’t sick are you?” asked Spot, taking a closer look at her friend, who was all huddled in the corner of his stall.
“No,” lied Fawn. “I’m not sick.”
Meanwhile, Fawn was sick. He had a very high temperature and his right ear was very painful.
“Oh my,” said Spot, feeling Fawn’s forehead. “Fawn, you are sick. You have a fever. I’m going to call the veterinarian.”
“It seems your friend has a severe ear infection,” said Dr. Baker, Fawn and Spot’s veterinarian. “His right ear is completely swollen. I’ve never seen an ear infection this bad.”
“Oh no,” said Spot. “Is he going to be alright?”
“Oh yes,” said the doctor. “He’ll be just fine in a few days. Meanwhile, give him these drops in his ear four times daily and give him these tablets for the pain. He is going to be in severe pain for the next few days.”
Within a few days time, Fawn was back to his usual self. However, he did learn a very valuable lesson. He learned to listen to what his friend had to say and not to let his pride get in his way.
“Good boy,” said Spot, when she noticed Fawn putting his hat on before going outside.
