April Fool’s Day

This story was published in the March/April 2009 issue of the Scouting Life Magazine

“Hey Fawn,” said Spot. “Let’s go outside and play in the snow.”

Fawn ran to the front door, saw green grass everywhere and turned to look at Spot with a weird look on his face.

“April Fools!” exclaimed Spot, laughing. “By the way, we have to clean up. Grampy is coming today for a visit.”

“You expect me to believe that,” said Fawn. “After all, it is April Fool’s Day.”

“Suit yourself,” said Spot.

Fawn went into his room and decided he wasn’t going to clean it. He knew Grampy wasn’t coming and he also knew Spot was just playing another April Fool’s Day joke on him.

“Fawn,” said Spot. “I baked a pie. Do you want a taste of it?”

“No,” said Fawn. “You didn’t bake any pie. I didn’t smell it. You are just trying to trick me again.”

“Fawn,” said Spot. “I baked it up at the main house.”

“Are you sure?” asked Fawn.

“Yes,” said Spot. “Come out to the kitchen and see.”

Fawn was surprised to see a freshly baked pie sitting on the counter.

“I changed my mind,” said Fawn. “I’ll have a piece.”

“I knew you would,” said Spot, cutting Fawn a nice big piece of pie.

“So if Grampy is coming then why are you not saving this pie for him?” asked Fawn, still not believing Spot that Grampy was really coming to see them.

“His pie is up at the main house,” said Spot.

“A likely story,” said Fawn.

Fawn ate his pie and went back to his room. He heard Spot vacuuming the barn and doing dishes.

“Fawn,” said Spot. “Can you get the door? I’m just finishing up the dishes here.”

“Grampy!” exclaimed Fawn. “You really are here.”

“Of course,” said Grampy. “I told Spot I was coming. Didn’t she tell you?”

“Yes,” said Fawn, now wishing he had have listened to Spot. “She did but I thought it was just an April’s Fools Day joke.”
