Safety First
It was a beautiful autumn day, with the warm sunlight casting a golden glow over the landscape. The air was crisp and cool, filled with the sweet scent of ripe fruit and the earthy smell of fallen leaves. Mabel Owl perched on a branch, watching her friend, Mouse, with warm, gentle eyes. Mouse was having the time of his life, jumping and playing in a huge pile of leaves that were piled high like a golden mountain.
“Watch out!” Mabel heard a voice shriek behind her. She turned to see a man waving his arms wildly as he spoke to a group of children. Mabel’s eyes snapped back to Mouse, and she saw that there was a rake sticking out of the leaves. Her heart skipped a beat as she thought that Mouse was in danger.
Without hesitation, Mabel swooped down, her wings beating softly, and grabbed Mouse, tucking him safely into her wings. Mouse looked up at her with wide, startled eyes, but Mabel just smiled reassuringly.
“Oh dear,” she said, her soft voice soothing. “When I heard that man scream and saw the rake in the pile of leaves, I thought you were in danger.”
Mouse’s face lit up with a warm smile. “I kind of like the fact that you watch out for me,” he said, his tiny voice filled with gratitude. “It makes me feel loved and cared for.” Mabel’s eyes shone with warmth as she looked at Mouse. “I know I overreacted,” she said, her soft voice filled with apology. “I am sorry and will try not to do that again.”
Mouse’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Can I go play again?” he asked, his tiny voice filled with excitement. “Now that I am not in any danger.”
Mabel smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. “Yes,” she said. “But please find a different pile of leaves. I don’t want to see you get hurt because of that rake.”
Mouse nodded, his ears twitching with understanding.
“Okay,” he said and scurried off to find a smaller and safer pile of leaves to play in.
