Daisy the Skunk

“Who are you?” asked Fawn to a small black and white animal that was standing beside the barn.

“My name is Daisy,” said the animal. “You’re lucky I didn’t get scared when I saw you!”

“Why?” asked Fawn.

“Because I am a skunk!” exclaimed Daisy. “Skunks like to spray when we get scared.”

“Spray what?” asked Fawn.

“Well,” said Daisy. “I will tell you this much, you wouldn’t like the smell of it!”

“Oh,” said Fawn.

“What is your name?” asked Daisy.

“I’m Fawn,” said Fawn. “I am a cow. We don’t spray!”

“Well, that’s good,” said Daisy. “I’m glad to meet you!”

“I’m glad to meet you too,” said Fawn. “Would you like to meet my friend, Spot?”

“Yes, I would,” said Daisy.

Fawn brought Daisy inside the barn, where Spot was cleaning her stall.

“Spot,” said Fawn. “I’d like you to meet my new friend Daisy.”

Spot turned around and all of a sudden she became as white as a ghost.

“Fawn, what are you doing with a skunk!” exclaimed Spot.

“It’s okay Spot,” said Fawn. “Daisy is my friend. She won’t spray unless she is scared!”

“Oh,” said Spot. “Hi Daisy! I’m Fawn’s friend, Spot.”

“Hi Spot,” said Daisy.

Fawn, Spot and Daisy stood around inside the barn for a few minutes talking.

“Well,” said Daisy. “I’ve got to get going now. It sure was nice meeting you two!”

“Same here!” said Fawn. “Come back sometime and then we can play.”

“Okay,” said Daisy.

Daisy walked out the barn door and just as she was going around the corner of the barn, Mr. Hansen was right there in front of her. Daisy arched up her tail and sprayed Mr. Hansen, because she was scared. Mr. Hansen came into the barn with a very bad odour lingering on him.

”I guess Daisy got scared,” said Fawn, trying to stifle a laugh.

”Who is Daisy?” asked Mr. Hansen.

Fawn told Mr. Hansen all about his new friend Daisy.

”Well,” said Mr. Hansen. ”I guess it’s alright for you to have a skunk for a friend, but just do me a favour.

”Sure!” exclaimed Fawn.

”Keep your friend away from the barn and away from me!” exclaimed Mr. Hansen.

Daisy came to see Fawn the next day. Fawn explained to Daisy al about what Mr. Hansen had said to him and that from then on they would have to play outside in the back field.

Daisy and Fawn became the best of friends and Fawn was always careful not to scare Daisy.
