Gardens

“Hey Spot,” said Fawn. “I need your help.”

Spot  was outside working on her vegetable garden. She looked over to where Fawn was standing. He had a small shovel and hoe in his hands.

“What are you doing?” asked Spot, as she came closer to where Fawn was.

“I am planting a garden,” said Fawn.

Spot didn’t know what to say. She could see no evidence of any soil being turned over. She just saw the patches of grass on the lawn.

“Where is your garden?” asked Spot.

“It is right over there,” said Fawn, pointing to a spot way out in the middle of the field.

“Fawn,” said Spot. “Why is your garden way out in the middle of that field?”

“Because Mr. Hansen told me to plant it away from the barn,” said Fawn.

“Okay,” said Spot. “What have you done with your garden plot so far?”

“Nothing yet,” said Fawn. “I just got the hoe and shovel out of the back of the barn.”

“Okay,” said Spot, somehow thinking she was going to regret this. “I am going to give you a piece of my garden.”

“You are!” exclaimed Fawn. “That is awesome. Thank you Spot.”

“However,” said Spot. “It is totally your responsibility to take care of it.”

“Don’t worry,” said Fawn. “I will.”

Summer came and went and for some reason that Spot couldn’t figure out, Fawn’s section of the garden grew way better than hers.

“I don’t get it,” said Spot to Mrs. Hansen, one day, while standing outside admiring Fawn’s garden.

“I don’t either,” said Mrs. Hansen. “I think Fawn has a green thumb.”

“Green thumb,” laughed Mr. Hansen, just coming up behind Spot and Mrs. Hansen and knowing exactly what they are talking about. “Fawn doesn’t have a green thumb.”

“Then why is his side of the garden doing so well,” said Spot.

“It is probably because he is out there in the middle of the night with a flashlight tending to it,” said Mr. Hansen. “I have been outside putting the tractor away many nights and have seen him out there in the middle of the night, pulling out weeds and even watering it.”

“Gee,” laughed Spot. “That explains why he is so tired during the day and what he is doing actually makes some sense because it is cooler at night.”

“Exactly,” said Mr. Hansen.

The next year Spot did the same thing as Fawn and she was amazed at how good both their gardens were that year.
