Travelin’ Rick Comes Home for Thanksgiving

The phone was ringing just as Travelin’ Rick sat down to eat his dinner. He was going to just let it ring but something told him to answer it.

“Hello son,” said an older voice, when he picked up the phone.

“Mother!” exclaimed Travelin’ Rick. “What a surprise!”

Travelin’ Rick has been so busy that he hadn’t had a chance to call his Mother in a long while.

“I just wanted to ask if you had any plans for Thanksgiving,” said Mother.

“I don’t,” said Travelin’ Rick.

“Would you like to spend Thanksgiving with me?” asked Mother.

“Yes,” said Travelin’ Rick. “That would be nice. It has been awhile since I have been home.”

Travelin’ Rick told Baby Patrick, his partner, about his plans for Thanksgiving.

“Oh no!” exclaimed Baby Patrick. “I thought you were going to spend Thanksgiving with my family. You were going to help my dad clean out the garage.”

“I completely forgot,” said Travelin’ Rick. “I can call Mother tonight and let her know I already had plans.”

That night, while eating dinner, something was eating at Travelin’ Rick. He didn’t want to call his Mother to cancel. He thought about how old she was getting and how this could be the last time he saw her. At the same time, he didn’t want to let Baby Patrick’s family down. He went to pick up the phone but before he got to the phone, the phone rang. It was Baby Patrick. His dad wanted to know if he wouldn’t mind helping him the next weekend instead.

“That is fine with me,” said Travelin’ Rick.

Travelin’ Rick was very glad that he was able to spend Thanksgiving with his Mother. It turns out that she was very ill.

“Son,” Mother said as Travelin’ Rick was getting to ready to leave to go back home. “I am very ill and while this might be my last Thanksgiving, it was certainly the best.”

“Yes,” said Travelin’ Rick to his Mother as he kissed her forehead. “It certainly was the best.”
