Missy Big Words – Determination

Missy Big Words was in the garage helping her father. It was a hot and humid summer day and both Missy Big Words and her father had sweat dripping from their foreheads.

“We can change the tire on this car tonight when it cools down,” said Daddy. “It is much too hot to be out here in the garage right now.”

“Daddy,” said Missy Big Words. “Where is your determination gone? I thought you wanted this car finished this afternoon so that we could go to the lake after supper.”

“Well,” said Daddy laughing. “Determination sure is a big word for you to be using. Do you know what it means?”

“Determination means to come to a decision about something and stick to it no matter what,” said Missy Big Words.

“Wow!” exclaimed Daddy. “I am so impressed with you and I am very proud of you was well. Where did you learn such a big word?”

“I learned it from you,” said Missy Big Words.

“Seriously?” asked Daddy.

“Yes,” said Missy Big Words. “You taught me to have determination. You taught me that when I decide to do something that I should stick it out until the job is done no matter what gets in the way.”

“Please hand me that tire wrench,” said Daddy, wiping the sweat off his forehead. “I have just found my renewed sense of determination to get these tires changed on this car.”

Daddy worked hard at changing the tires. Missy Big Words worked hard as well, giving Daddy the tools he needed and putting tools away Daddy was no longer using.

“Thank you for working on my car,” said Mr. Jones, the neighbour. “My wife wants to go grocery shopping. I guess she has the determination to make sure I stay broke.”

Miss Big Words and Daddy laughed. They closed the garage door and closed shop for the rest of the day. They were both full of determination to get to the lake so they could cool down by going for a swim.
