The Joke that Backfired
Jackie Jester woke up on April Fool’s Day with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. He tiptoed around the kitchen, pulling the curtains closed, without bothering to take a look outside. His sly smile widened as he imagined the surprise he had in store for Mother.
“What are you up to?” asked Mother, entering the room. She noticed the drawn curtains and raised an eyebrow. “Have you closed the curtains?”
“Yes,” said Jackie Jester, his voice barely containing the excitement. “I don’t want to see what’s out there.”
Mother’s curiosity piqued. “And what exactly is out there?”
Jackie Jester leaned in, whispering conspiratorially, “Something unexpected. But it’s a secret.”
“You better get ready for school,” Mother said, her tone firm.
Jackie Jester grinned. “There is no school today, Mother.”
Mother’s stern expression softened. “And why not?”
“Because,” Jackie Jester hesitated before revealing his April Fool’s joke, “because it’s snowing outside.”
Mother’s eyes widened. “Snow? In April?”
Jackie Jester nodded solemnly. “April Fool’s!”
He burst into laughter, unable to contain his delight. But when Mother walked over to the window and pulled back the curtain, his expression changed.
Jackie Jester’s jaw dropped. There, beyond the window, lay a pristine blanket of freshly fallen snow. It covered the ground, the trees, and even the rooftops. A foot of snow, as if winter had decided to play its own prank.
“Oh gee,” sighed Jackie Jester.
Mother chuckled. “April Fool’s indeed! You forgot to look outside before playing your trick.”
Jackie Jester’s sly smile returned. “Well, Mother, I guess the joke is on me!”
And so, Jackie Jester learned that sometimes life’s surprises are better than any prank he could concoct. As the snow sparkled in the morning light, he realized that magic could be found even in unexpected places—like a snowy April Fool’s Day.
