St. Patrick’s Day Parade
“Tommy,” said Grand Old Leprechaun, who had stopped by to see him one morning, just before St. Patrick’s Day. “As you know, St. Patrick’s Day is coming up. I want you to walk in this year’s parade with me.”
“Oh,” said Tommy Leprechaun, taken aback. “That is such an honour. I would love to.”
Tommy Leprechaun was so excited. All young leprechauns looked forward to be chosen to walk with Grand Old Leprechaun. Tommy started practising his marching steps right away.
“Oh look!” cried George, a leprechaun that was around Tommy’s age. “I guess we know who Grand Old Leprechaun chose to walk in the parade with him this year. It isn’t fair. He doesn’t even know how to march right. He isn’t lifting his knee high enough. Grand Old Leprechaun should have chosen me.”
“You are just jealous,” said Tommy, angrily. “Yes, Grand Old Leprechaun chose me but I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Why are you getting so angry?” asked Grand Old Leprechaun, coming down the walkway and hearing Tommy yelling at the other leprechauns. “I just chose you. I wanted you to walk in the parade with me. That is a big honour.”
“They were teasing me,” said Tommy.
“I see,” said Grand Old Leprechaun.
“George said I wasn’t marching right,” said Tommy.
“I want to see all of you march,” said Grand Old Leprechaun.
All of the young leprechauns lined up and started to march, including Tommy.
“Okay,” said Grand Old Leprechaun after a few minutes of watching them. “I don’t know why you are teasing Tommy. He is the only one that is marching properly. Tommy, I want you to teach the others how to march properly.”
“We are sorry,” said George. “We didn’t mean to tease Tommy.”
“I am glad you didn’t mean it,” said Grand Old Leprechaun. “I still want Tommy to teach you how to march properly.”
St. Patrick’s Day came and Tommy marched proudly beside Grand Old Leprechaun in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
“You are doing so good,” said George, watching as Tommy and Grand Old Leprechaun passed by him. “I am proud of you.”
“Thank you so much,” said Tommy, waving to George. “Why don’t you come and march behind us?”
“Great idea,” said Grand Old Leprechaun. “That will give the other leprechauns some practise.”
Grand Old Leprechaun, Tommy, George and several other young leprechauns walked the length of the parade.
“That was fun,” said George, once the parade was over.
“Tommy,” said Grand Old Leprechaun. “That was a very kind act, letting the others march with us. I think I am going to chose you for next St. Patrick’s Day as well.”
“I think we should let George march next year,” said Tommy.
“Why don’t we march together?” asked George.
“I would like that,” said Tommy, feeling very happy and very good about himself.
