Let’s Learn

“Good morning children,” said Mrs. Pearce. “Open up your books to page 147.”

“Oh do we have to?” asked Donny, a grade four student.

“Yeah,” said Anthony, who sat right behind Donny. “Why can’t we do something different for a change? All we ever do is study from these big, bulky text books. How come we can’t go on a trip or something?”

“We would probably learn a lot more,” said Donny.

“The only thing is that we have no money in our budget for trips,” said Mrs. Pearce.

“Why can’t we raise some money?” asked Anthony.

“Well,” said Mrs. Pearce. “I suppose that we could do something like that. Do you have any ideas?”

“How about selling chocolate bars?” asked Donny.

“That is a great idea,” said Mrs. Pearce.

“How about having a dance?” asked Erin, one of the girls in the class asked.

“Dances are for sissies!” exclaimed Donny.

“Now class,” said Mrs. Pearce. “Let’s discuss this.”

“Let’s have a vote,” said Anthony.

“That’s a good idea,” said Mrs. Pearce.

Mrs. Pearce took a vote. It ended up being a tie because there was the same number of boys and girls in the class and all the boys wanted to sell chocolate bars and all the girls wanted to hold a dance.

“Well now what are we going to do?” asked Donny.

“Why can’t you just do both?” asked Mrs. Pearce.

“Yeah,” said Anthony. “Why couldn’t we do that?”

“That’s a great idea,” said Erin.

“Yes,” said Donny. “It is.”

“I’ve got an even better idea,” said Erin. “Why don’t you boys sell refreshments at the dance? Everyone would like to buy some clips and pop and chocolate bars at the dance.”

“My Dad can get us most of that stuff at cost,” said Donny.

“Yes,” said Erin. “He owns the grocery store. My Uncle is a disc jockey so I can probably get him to help with the music for the dance.-

“Now that is a wonderful idea,” said Mrs. Pearce. “Okay class then it’s settled.”

Just then, the bell rang.

“Okay class,” said Mrs. Pearce, as the students .started cleaning the books from their desks. “Your assignment for tonight is to write a short essay about what each of you would like to do to help out in the fund raising events. We will go over them tomorrow.”

The students worked very hard preparing for the fund raising events. They were very organized and methodical in their planning, writing everything down and keeping track of each receipt they received. This method proved to be quite successful and the students ended up receiving a lot of support from the community.

The dance turned out to be a huge success. The girls did a wonderful job of decorating the gymnasium and the boys sold a lot of chocolate bars, chips and pop.

“You have raised over $800.00,” announced Mrs. Pearce the next morning. “I am very proud of you.”

“Wow!” exclaimed Anthony and Donny.

“Now,” said Erin. “We just have to figure out where we are going to go for a field trip.”
