Hot Summer for Sprinkles
Sprinkles woke up one very hot summer morning. She was soaked in sweat. She noticed that she had a handful of sprinkles in her palm — sprinkles she must have created while dreaming. It was so hot that even her sprinkles were starting to melt.
“Oh dear!” cried Sprinkles, running into the kitchen where her mother was. “Mother! My sprinkles are melting! What am I going to do?”
Mother turned from the counter and saw the sticky, colourful mess in Sprinkles’ hand. “Goodness! It is hot today. Quick — let’s get those into the freezer before they turn into syrup.”
Sprinkles hurried over, and Mother opened the freezer door. Sprinkles placed the melting sprinkles inside a small bowl, and the cold air rushed over them. Within moments, they firmed back up into perfect little candy pieces.
“There,” said Mother. “Crisis solved.”
Sprinkles sighed with relief. “I think my bedroom needs a freezer.”
Mother laughed. “A freezer might be a bit much. But we can go to the mall and get you a small fan to keep your room cool.”
Sprinkles brightened. “Yes! That would help. Let’s go!”
Sprinkles and Mother had a great time at the mall. Mother bought her a fan for her bedroom. They also enjoyed lunch together. Mother bought them both an ice‑cream cone, and Sprinkles closed her eyes and thought happy thoughts — sunshine, birthday parties, and sweet treats. A fresh handful of sprinkles appeared in her palm, colourful and bright.
She sprinkled them on top of her ice cream.
“Good ice cream,” said Sprinkles.
“Nothing like fresh sprinkles on top,” said Mother, laughing.
“And we get them for free,” giggled Sprinkles.
