Character Notes

Following his transformation into a zombie, Zimba was abandoned by his parents, who refused to risk their younger daughter turning into one as well. Taking him in without hesitation, Zimba’s grandmother brought him to live on the family ranch, providing a safe haven away from a fearful world. She homeschools Zimba and is continually amazed by his extraordinary intelligence. Refusing to cling to false hopes about reversing his zombism—knowing life is too short for illusions—she focuses on making his life as pleasant, fulfilling, and comfortable as possible. Recognizing that Zimba depends entirely on her, she also works hard to stay as healthy as she can, weighed down by constant worry over what will happen to him after she passes.

For his part, Zimba loves and respects his grandmother with all of what is left of his heart. Out of consideration for others, he spends almost the entire year keeping a low profile on the ranch, fully aware that people are terrified of him even though he wishes they were not. His one major exception is Halloween, when he ventures out to the mall. Even though his presence terrifies shoppers and leads to him being escorted off the premises by security, Zimba takes it in stride, taunting the guard with a cheerful promise that he will be back next Halloween before returning to the peaceful sanctuary of the ranch.
