The Secret in the Log

Storyland Canada – Corners – Spot

Spot was still looking toward the oak where Racum had disappeared when she heard branches rustling behind her. She turned to see the raccoon scurrying back down, his paws empty but his eyes bright with fresh worry.

“I need your help again,” Racum said, wringing his paws. “There’s a chocolate bunny hidden in the old log by the ant hill. Easter Bunny asked me to keep it safe, but I forgot where I tucked it.” He glanced nervously toward the meadow. “If Fawn finds it first, she’ll eat it before the celebration. You have to spot it before she does.”

Spot’s chest tightened. Fawn loved chocolate more than anything, and that ant hill was exactly the kind of place her partner would investigate. She hurried through the underbrush until she found the fallen log, its rotting wood split open in places. The massive ant hill rose beside it, already drawing her attention with its busy tunnels. Spot forced herself to focus on the log instead, scanning every crack and shadow. There, wedged deep in a hidden space beneath loose bark, sat a chocolate bunny wrapped in foil.

She pulled it free just as she heard Fawn’s familiar footsteps approaching through the trees. Spot tucked the chocolate behind her and stepped forward to greet her partner, leading Fawn away from the log with cheerful conversation about the interesting mushrooms she’d noticed near the meadow. Later, when she returned the bunny to Racum, he thanked her with visible relief. Spot walked home knowing she’d kept Fawn safe from trouble once more, but also knowing this would not be the last time.

Moral of this Story:

  • True friendship means looking out for others, even when they don’t realize they need help.
  • Example: A good friend quietly guides others away from trouble, just as Spot gently led Fawn from the log to keep her safe.
