No Fear

“Hey,” said Lil’ Rebel to her friend, Sally. “What to go to the cave tonight?”

“No,” said Sally, a shiver running down her spine. “Everyone says it is dangerous.”

“What danger?” asked Lil’ Rebel. “It is just a cave.”

“Yeah,” said Sally. “It is just a cave but have you not heard about the legend of the cave.”

“Who hasn’t?” asked Lil’ Rebel. “That is why I’m going to go to the cave tonight? I’m going to prove that the legend is not true.”

“I’m not going,” said Sally.

“You’re a chicken,” said Lil’ Rebel. “But suit yourself.”

“So you are seriously going,” said Sally.

“Yes,” said Lil’ Rebel. “I am!”

“Well,” said Sally, not wanting to see her friend do something foolish and get hurt. “I’ll come with you to the entrance of the cave but that is as far as I’m going.”

That evening after dinner, Sally met Lil’ Rebel on the path to the cave. Sally had a backpack with her.

“What did you bring in your backpack?” asked Lil’ Rebel as they got closer to the cave entrance.

“Snack bars, water, flashlight, blanket and first aid kit,” said Sally.

“It is a good thing you were thinking,” said Lil’ Rebel. “I just have my MP3 player with me.”

The closer they got to the cave’s entrance, the more Lil’ Rebel’s heart started pounding. She was scared to death, however, now that Sally was with her she had to keep going. Sally would think she was the one that was chicken and she couldn’t have that happen.

“Are you sure you want to go inside the cave?” asked Sally, about a foot from the entrance, giving Lil’ Rebel the flashlight.

“Yes,” said Lil’ Rebel. “I’m sure.”

Lil’ Rebel took the flashlight from Sally. She immediately turned the flashlight on and shined it into the entrance of the cave. It looked eerie inside but Lil’ Rebel had to keep going.

“Are you okay?” asked Sally a few minutes after Lil’ Rebel entered the cave.

Lil’ Rebel didn’t answer. Lil’ Rebel couldn’t do anything. She was so frightened at what she saw in the entrance of the cave that she couldn’t move an inch. Sally became frightened because her friend wasn’t answering her. She inched toward the entrance of the cave and bravely she entered it too.

Sally saw Lil’ Rebel standing still as a mouse with the flashlight shining on an object hanging from a noose in the center of the cave. In the noose was a human skeleton. Sally let out an ear piercing scream. That frightened Lil’ Rebel even more and both girls ran out of the cave as fast as they could.

“Did you see that?” asked Sally. “The legend is true.”

“Look,” said Lil’ Rebel. “Let’s not ever tell anyone what we saw. Let’s not ever mention this ever again.”

“Okay with me,” said Sally.

As Lil’ Rebel and Sally were walking along the path to their home, they saw a group of young boys sitting on a log laughing and giggling.

“So is the legend true?” asked one boy.

Lil’ Rebel saw something in one of the boy’s hands. She saw a piece of rope and it looked very much like the rope that she saw in the cave.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” said Lil’ Rebel, winking at Sally.

“Yeah,” said Sally. “I went into the cave with Lil’ Rebel. I didn’t see anything at all.”

The two girls walked quickly away from the boys and Lil’ Rebel explained to Sally what she suspected.

“So,” said Lil’ Rebel. “Let’s go back to the cave before the boys get there and when they go take that skeleton down, let’s scare them.”

“I don’t know,” said Sally.

“Come on,” said Lil’ Rebel. “It’ll teach them a lesson.”

“Okay,” said Sally.

Sally and Lil’ Rebel took a different path to the cave entrance and they were able to get to the cave before the boys. They hid in one of the caverns and waited for the boys to arrive.
A few minutes later, the boys arrived and took down the skeleton.

“Did you see the look in Lil’ Rebel’s eyes?” asked one of the boys. “She was scared to death of our little friend.”

“Yes,” said another of the boys. “And so was Sally.”

Sally and Lil’ Rebel picked up large rocks and they threw them at the cavern wall, making an earth shattering sound.

The boys dropped everything they were doing and ran. They were far away from the cave entrance when Lil’ Rebel and Sally burst out laughing.

The next day at school the boys were telling everyone that they knew the cave was haunted and that the legend was true. Lil’ Rebel and Sally told everyone the exact opposite. Nobody in the school knew who to believe but each one was terrified to find out for sure.
